At the risk of disturbing our Roy Stewart friend across diitch, I need some advice.

Who uses sunscreen and what are you using?

Over the last couple of years I've tried maybe 5 different brands.

They burn my skin more quickly than the sun. And all sting my eyes. Even the "sensitive skin" ones. My skin cancer specialist tells me it's not uncommon.

I had a couple of tubes of "Island Tribe" which came from South Africa.

Which was perfect. More of a light gel than a runny cream.

No longer made apparently.

I only use it if I surf outside my normally hours of first light for a couple of hours.

So maybe once or twice a week and at the monthly club comp.

Any suggestions please?

Wear your long sleeve rashy, cap and put some surf mud or similar natural zinc product on your face.
Fuck the sunscreen off.
Put some on your legs if you’re really paranoid about getting burnt.

Surf mud is great, my son puts a layer on his face pre surf and then goes fishing for the day, protects his face all day.

I've tried surf mud. I'd like other alternatives preferably.
But I'll use it if I have to.

If you’re specifically after a traditional sunscreen then can’t really help you with that unfortunately.
They’re all carcinogenic and irritating of the skin as far as my experience goes so I minimise my use of them.
Generally I only use them on my arms in the middle of summer if I’m wearing a tshirt in the surf.
This time of year I don’t bother really covering up at all. Maybe a spot of mud on the nose and cheeks for a midday long surf, but I’m not doing that anymore anyway.

Who remembers bullfrog. It was like superglue.
I’ve got a big pump pack of Le Tan. I put some on every time I go surfing.
Banana Boat was pretty good too but they had a bit of variation between the different styles of bottle.
Followed by Tan Zinc on my nose.
Just stopped wearing a hat or cap since the suns less intense.
I hate hats. Always wear a long sleeved rashie.

Genuine question. I have no idea about all this so conflicting reports don't help me.

I guess at 76 years old and only using it at most once a week, carcinogenic properties aren't as major as issue for me as someone younger and using it daily.

The big beef is about some ingredients effecting coral reefs.
Zincs good for your skin if anything.
Some stuff burns your eyes but that’s got more to do with the stability of the ingredients than the ingredients themselves.
Soap burns your eyes too. No way is using sunscreen more dangerous than not using it.

Dude, I’ve had multiple BCCs and a melanoma cut out of my back plus regular sunspots burnt off.
So many young guys are wearing bucket hats in the surf these days you don’t stand out as much.
Still hate wearing hats though.

Trev, the Cancer Council covering cream ones are pretty mild.
Not cheap, but you aren't using all that much.

I've been using it for decades now for my face and neck. Regular sunscreen on my legs, and a brimmed hat.

Whether proven or not, limiting exposure to chemicals throughout my lifetime is a good choice for me.
Surf early and late. Use actual barriers in the middle of the day.
People get all kinds of cancers and who knows what caused a lot of them, probably an accumulation of exposures to various things throughout their lifetime. Sometimes just genetic bad luck. Skin cancer with regular skin checks is probably the easiest to treat when getting to it early.

That invisible zinc is alright. Not exactly invisible. I prefer surf mud.
