A staff member told me if there’s less than 18 in the group they let them (staff) as long as shift is over, join the group.

Yes the surf coaches are cool. There was one in our group.

Went to the tub today. Had a sub par session but the whole experience was marred by a serious customer service fail. The siren for last wave had gone everyone was lined up for their waves, when about 10 people who I assumed where the lifesavers swam past the line of surfers to the take off zone and bobbed about trying to snag waves from the paying customers! I took my wave and someone was swimming on my inside trying to catch it as well so I blew my take off. When I asked them what the f*ck they were doing, one guy just said don't get angry, and the girls who snaked me said just go get another wave. I told her the siren had gone but she just looked at me blank faced. Their attitude convinced me that they were clubbies and don't get that they're part of a service business.

That’s a bit poor. Staff should give way to the paying customers.

Same if you go on a boat trip or a land camp to some exotic destination. The cook is a 25 year old frother from the gold coast, the owner or skipper only started the whole thing so they can surf all the time, the crew are often all die hard surfers that took the job on so they can score waves for free. The line up goes from 8 paying customers to 15 and the crew, with local knowledge, are all over the good ones.

Yeah, second day at Cloudbreak it was better than the first. I snapped my boards in the first half hour and most of the customers were back in the boat in an hour. Sat around for another two watching the Skipper and crew with one customer out there. Fun to watch but we could have left an hour earlier by most estimates.

I had my first go at the tub this morn.
Just 1 hr on the lefts.
To surf it well I think you need to either rip or get to know it well because you need to more or less predict the sections as you can’t see them coming and line them up as you do in the ocean.

We only had 13 out and I got a wave every set.
Most sets I was lined up with Mark the scud Phillipousis and he was my surf guide

He was doing back to back rights then lefts and was pretty torched by the end

I surfed pinhead’s board based on his recommendation.
Saved me spending too much time feeling them all up.

What! They don't paddle over and give you a bit of a push to make sure you get that set wave of your life?

After going down the Vicco coast yesterday, my first 3 waves were far better than anything I got in the pool.
Beyond that though, it was crowded and then the sets slowed up so I hardly got anything else.

There are so many kooks in the water down here compared to NNSW.
I think it’s because the paddle outs are so easy. Even when there’s 5 ft sets the ocean goes flat between and hardly any sweep, in fact none at all yesterday.

After I got my first set wave I paddled back to the top happy to wait my turn in the group up there and when the proper sets arrived no one even looked at them and just let me have them.
So those 3 waves were in a row. Then when they dried up it was a lot less fun.

So in terms of quality the ocean gets a big tick, wave count goes to the pool where I had 17 waves in the hour.
2.5 hours in the ocean I think I had around 10 waves which was a lot more than others caught out there.

After the last few surfs I've had around here I'm about ready to give it a miss till I can get away somewhere half decent. It's purely paddling exercise.

Back on the N coast this morn, great fun 2-3 ft waves, very consistent. Sun out, warm water, just me and a mate - was way better than the pool.
