That insta post was a promo shot I reckon. Wouldn’t be 100% certain that he even posted it himself.

Honestly to me the only real thing is the surfing in the great surf zones, otherwise the whole thing is bullshit, but it is nuanced bullshit, like the English broadcast on Facey right now is getting 17k, a bit of a jump from 5k. Yet the people in charge of pro surfing never used to worry themselves about numbers. Hard as it may be to believe, most of them never worried about how many people surfed or any of that jazz. They figured, nobody drives F1 cars either, nobody drives on NASCAR tracks, nobody plays at Augusta, yet these sports are huge businesses. Pro surfing doesn’t need more surfers, it just needs to blow minds.

See, that is the kind of magical thinking that has always bedevilled pro surfing.

Nobody drives an F1 car, but every one drives a car and everyone, even me a total non car nut can understand in less than 3 seconds who is winning the race.

I hate Golf but I can understand immediately who is winning and why. On a par 5 if a bloke gets a 3 that makes perfect and immediate sense to me.As a non golfer I can watch the US Open and it is comprehensible to me.

One of my favourite things is to watch Pro surfing with my dear old dad, a non surfer but sports fanatic.
He tries so hard, because he knows it's a big part of my life.

He can kind of hold a conversation with talking points: " so Mick Fanning has retired eh?" etc etc

But when it comes to watching a heat, it's total and complete gobbledegook to him. He has no idea who is winning or why. A 3 can look better to him than an 8.

Thats the thing: pro surfing is incomprehensible to non surfers. It's barely comprehensible to surfers most of the time, absent death or glory situations like pipe, or Chopes or the Eddie.

If they think the wave pool will fix that they are in even deeper fairyland. The wavepool looks even more incomprehensible, more identical etc etc.

Joe Sixpack doesn't understand snowboarding but he can see blokes soaring 30 feet in the air and that is spectacular. A bloke or gal crouching down in the same identical muddy tube for 6 or 7 seconds each wave makes absolutely no sense to them and it's boring as batshit to any real surfer after the first 5 waves.

Surfing could offer something as a niche, fringe sport that played to its strengths but they are moving in the exact opposite direction to that.
And all of that based on a lie: this promise of a huge viewing audience.

My mum gave a pretty great summary of the pool when I showed her that first clip Kelly posted.
Her commentary was as follows.
"Wow, he's a good surfer. Looks cold. Nothing much happens. It's very muddy. He's probably going to get an ear infection."

 yeah, it's hard to get a handle on how little the general public understand.

Surfing is a great thing to do, trying to make it a competitive sport does not automatically follow on from that.

Maybe that's the problem.

People need to watch it on 3-D televisions with barrel cam. Thinking about it so do I!

Jbay views 25k max?
3.4 million watched State of Origin 1
And a youtuber who shows how to make cakes that look like emojis has 2.1 million followers (I know this from Nailed It! my new favorite show on Netflix)
Very good news, my surfing friends. Very good news indeed.

That's compelling. It's a bugger because I like watching it, even the lulls.

The other big problem: multiple lay days until everyone forgets it's even on.

Lakey Peterson is fcuken killing 'em. Really getting hold of the wave. There's a lot of caution in the lighter footed surfers today, but JBay like this you really just want to hit the thing with an axe.

Just tuned in.
Watching Steph, Sage and Nikki.
They look out of their element.

Nikki looks the most comfortable on the bigger sets.
