I had a dream Mikey, Gabriel and John John formed a boy's band and it was going good they understood one another even though their tastes in music differed and all the girls and young women from Saquarema to Smut Eye were digging it but then some greedy mean company-head pricks came along and messed with their minds and so it all just fell apart and they went back to surfing their different ways. Paddle battles galore!

When Geopolitics become too overwhelming, surf mythologies are the best eh? (as are music and sinemaar ones)

Quarters of the Suck Her Rim Her Pro coming up in about a million years. The spunky Julian Wilson is on top of the rankings and still in this event. This could be his year. Except for one thing: Felipe has the fire! But he often drops it. And Gabriel is spunky too. That's two things. There must be heaps more. My prediction: the winner of the men's event will have a girl's name.

The last time I was paid for a surf contest report was in 2001, I think, No Pants Lance. Hogwash and nonsense! I hardly remember a word. But I suppose it paid the bills at the time. Paid for ecstasy and cocaine in the nightclubs of Seminyak. I gotta say surf journalism's good for something.

Hey now this is bringing back the memories. I remember one yacht trip I did with a bunch of Australian guys trying to make it in competitive surfing and we went to Desert Point and in the article I think I called it "Brand Awareness Bay" trying to keep it secret and all a million years after everyone already knew about it, but like check the boardies these dudes are ripping in. Maybe that's not funny or cool. The next day I probably broke the nose of my board riding down a Kuta back alley not paying attention to the walls. Teach me.

no way, steve. i'm going to get drunk and read your articles and get on heat analyzer and watch the best waves over and over. i'm going to live in an old shack by the sea and breathe the sweet salt air, live with the dawn and the dusk, the new moon and the full moon, the tides, the wind and the rain, i'm going to surf and comb the beach, gather sea shells and drift-wood, know the thrill of loneliness, lose all sense of time, be free... no more surf journalism for me. :)
