i just noticed a little boy catching the reform in front of the contest area. that would be a surf to remember for him i imagine, if he's just getting the hang of it.

well, no

Last year Ross pretty much just walked through it with John. JJF had such high moments, it was really hard to see how he could fail to win the world title. He was really running on the gas Bede put in his tank the year before. Bede taught him a bit about how to win heats and it won John his first title and carried him into the next. It was that and Pyzel's wonderful design work.

Sometimes it's a wise coaching move to stay out of the way. But John made some really basic errors in 2017 in heats he should have won with ease. He nearly fumbled the whole thing against Ethan Ewing at Pipe of all places. That showed something I think. Coaches at that level of any sport should be picking that stuff up and doing the little corrective things for the athlete, showing him or her a way forward, so he or she comes into the next year with an improved act. You saw a heap of that with the girls on Monday. I saw none of it with John today. Today was clearly about the second wave of the set. Mikey Wright was clued into that and executed the second wave strategy to a T. He sucked John into the bad rotation and held him there the whole heat.

John's surfing looked beautiful, more structurally sound than Mikey's, but you need the waves to win the heats.

Now John leaves Snapper with his first round two loss as a defending world champ.

So yeah, let's see what Ross Williams has got as a coach.

that second wave of the set thing seemed so obvious even to us punters on the other side of the world. weren't john and ross watching?

sounds like about as much fun as being in a tent full of Ai Weiwei sycophants dressed in Givenchy on a miserably wet sydney evening.

So would JJF.
