Re: Mentawai quiver.
I was looking at flights to Colombo for later in the year. Bloody hell. They are in the low to mid one thousand. And things seems to be pricier in Sri Lanka than they are in Indo.
Their nasi lemak is good. Air Asia used to fly out of the spartan LCCT which was great as it was only a short walk from the aero bridge to the bus stop to get out of the airport. I haven't heard good things about KLIA2. Changi it is not.

I wish I was going on Steves boat trip. Just hanging out with Shearer, surfing and lots of smiles.

I spent two weeks there early this year. Very unimpressed compared to the rest of SE Asia. About double the price and in general the towns are unpleasant places.petulance wrote: ↑Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:43 amI was looking at flights to Colombo for later in the year. Bloody hell. Transport was a killer, minimum of $120/day for a car with/without driver

Re: Mentawai quiver.
OK so my initial research seems to be correct about pricing. I was told it is about 1200 Rupees (about AUD$10) to hire a tuk tuk for 3 hours to get to a break that is 20 - 30 mins away.
How were the towns were unpleasant? Were you on the east or south west coast, Cranked?

Re: Mentawai quiver.
The towns we stayed at were Colombo/Negombo, Kandy, Nuriwa Ella and Galle. And, obviously, we passed through a fair swathe of Sri Lanka as we did that circuit.
A primary aim of the trip was to check out if it was a place we would want to go to regularly. The answer was no.
Didn't check out the surf coast at all. My neighbour here in Bali spends a few months there every year with his family and a bunch of friends every year and loves it. Its a family surf/holiday thing though, his pure surf centred trips are numerous and elsewhere

How were the towns unpleasant?
They were dirty, dusty, crowded, dominated by trucks and buses belching clouds of diesel polution, no real character. Some were OK, mainly the hill towns, but there was nothing compelling to make me want to go there at all, let alone again.
I think the endless civil war devastated the country, life was more geared to survival, not to their built enviroment.
For comparison, I think KL or Jakarta and tons of other asian towns are also not tourist destinations. Malaca and Panang are OK, once.

Thanks for the info, Cranked.
Oh but one can make an argument that KL and Jakarta are foodie destinations though one can find much better food north of KL.

Looks like a quiver decision has been made for me....tried to get a stripped fcs grub screw out of a board and made a right mess of it.
anyone had any luck with that before?

Re: Mentawai quiver.
I just found a grub screw on the floor of my kitchen. Given I keep my boards in the garage, I can’t figure out how it got there
Erase.
Re: Mentawai quiver.
FCS keys are 3/32, or 2.3mm, Allen keys. You need to get an Allen key the next size up (7/64 or 2.8 mm) and file the edges down, only gotta do a smidge each face, then shove it into the stripped hole so it sits firm, and unscrew it.steve shearer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 12, 2018 4:52 pmLooks like a quiver decision has been made for me....tried to get a stripped fcs grub screw out of a board and made a right mess of it.

I've done it a few times and it's always worked.

Re: Mentawai quiver.
Dab a bit of superglue on the tip of an FCS key and fix it into the screw . Remove when dry.
If it’s the thread of the box that’s rooted then fill it with resin and predrill a suitable hole to fit the grub screw.

Re: Mentawai quiver.
wow, where did you come from Albatross.
I think the screw is far too fcuked from me trying to get it out to work with the super glue trick.....I've fcukkng mangled it.
second job sounds out of my league.
