it's nuts. like being sucked down into a black hole. total nightmare. how did he even get his rail to bite in, then maintain enough mental clarity to continue on.

ha ha Teahupoo under six foot pretty much cut Keala Kennelly's face off.
it was 6-8 when keala came off. that was the tail end of the code red swell, which had heaps of west in it. ie the end pinches pretty much on dry reef if you don't flick off the wave.

I was there. Standing right in front of it. The code red swell was square SW, the tail end of it was SSW and KK's wave was about five foot. Not a particularly nasty wave. She rode it into the reef like everyone was doing that day, and fell badly. That's the kind of shit that happens at that joint but doesn't happen at Pipeline.

so you reckon teahupoo, heavier than pipe?

I've been scared at 4-6 (lets be real it was 5 foot, haha) pipe ... but small teahupoo was proper fun.

I think this really nails the intensity of a powerful wipe out.

Going fast but going slow, but going fast.

Just caught up with an old mate.
Had his surfing trip to the Telos cancelled when an old man orangutan in Sumatra broke a branch off a tree and speared it at him. Almost cut his arm off.

wow ... of all the dangers out there on remote surfing trips, near-fatal orangutang attack is something I've never considered.

That's why it's NEVER a good idea to drop in on an orangutang. Sure, the boys tell you it'll be funny but...

well they both have their days, like Pipe is harder to figure out and you're probably more likely to die there because there is so much sudden unpredictable shit going on

Teahupoo you can sit safely and catch the easier waves even on slightly bigger days. however the Code Red day when everyone towed it was by a long way the heaviest thing I've ever seen in surfing first hand, it made any day at Pipeline look like fucking Tugun in a nor easter. I can't believe everyone got away with it that day.
