fcuk! it has become a weird scene. Never before has it felt so divorced from the actual surfing experience. More than near divorced -- actually embracing its strangeness, willingly hurtling down a track entirely of its own devising, removed from any other impetus either surf-cultural or market driven.

so the global economy is beginning a real movement upward now. Will this be enough to convince some corpo lunatic to get on board this mad train?

Surfers seems such a heterogenous bunch that reference to a some sort of homogeneous surf culture seems delusory.
(which is possibly not what you implied, Nick, but I just felt like typing something because I'm drinking wine)

Well I'm drinking wine and feel like typing something too! "The illusion which exalts us is dearer to us than ten thousand truths." It's from Pushkin but I read it in a Chekhov story the other day after seeing a Facebook friend's post about the gooseberry pie she cooked and took a picture of. It's probably relevant to the discussion we're having here.

Just for once, I'd like to hear one of them say, "it's actually really shit out there, we shouldn't have to compete in that", rather than "it's pretty tricky out there".

It's getting worse. Now massive rips are going through the line-up. Put a screen around this comp and put a bullet in her, she's done.

Can someone remind Julian that surfing contests actually require you to catch waves, not just sit and watch them?

And now the final in progress with Julian scoring a 1.00 while Medina has caught 10 waves including a 0.2 (just how bad is that)
