They would not be pumping and bumping the boards with a good ol' 5'8'' Lazor Zap...

watching replays in a hotel room in Jo-burg, waiting for a plane to Pt Elizabeth

Like it's just round one but how the skills gap in the seedings is being demonstrated. Johnny with what looks like a cut down version of that Margarets board, just embarrassing half the field again.

Very impressive from JJ. Connor Coffin also looked good. Was disappointed in Wiggoly - I thought his backhand would light it up but he blew what would've huge.Of the other goofies only funky looked on the pace. Slater's 9 odd was good and his jive at the end was pretty cool. Early days but on that performance from JJ everyone else might be surfing for 2nd place.

The layback snaps seem to score highly. JJF, Flores and Coffin seem to be the only guys who nail them regularly.

Gabbys 9 for a floater and three turns seemed way over scored.

It's great to watch proper on rail surfing. Deep gouges, layback snaps and barrels. No whippy crap and no airs. Sorts the field out.

What's the travel time for you to JBay Nick? Slater tweeted it took him 36 hours door to door. Worth it for those waves I guess.

Heat 1 round 2. 10 minutes in, no waves ridden.

This is why pro surfing will struggle for a tv audience.
