Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
That's a shitload of words to state the obvious conclusion that the judging and resultant scores are based entirely on a highly subjective qualitative assessment of the wave and the surfer riding it. Oh hang on. You did mention it was 'the vibe'.
And remember that JJ's wave would probably be more like a 26.31 rather than a shitty 26.3. This system allows performance results to be determined by 1/100th of a point. That's impressive.

Now we know who the shark magnet is: Mr Wilson. It happened again with him in the water !!
Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
Filipe was in the water when they cleared it at Margarets, too.
Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
The J/Bay area is a strange creature, very stong affricarns culture, you don't see the real J/bay while the contest is on.Nick Carroll wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2017 10:18 pmAmazing isn't it.The Mighty Sunbird wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2017 8:03 pmHey Nick, are there any black people in South Africa?
I've been looking carefully and can't see any!
That's a knot I can't untangle TMS. One intelligent and observant local told me that of the 50 million people South Africa, a small number live in a middle class bubble, a few are very rich, and the rest "live in the reality of the nation". I would guess most of the rest are black and most of the middle class are white, and that would mean almost all the surfing population. There would be black resentment, white guilt, white-apartheid arrogance and contempt, nouveau black wealth, the whole ten yards. Around this event there's a lot of people working on security, service, clean-up etc who are black but they are not exactly the targets of the WSL's cameras.
I saw something pretty offensive at the airport in Joburg, something that told me apartheid consciousness is as alive on the ground here as the old white Australia bigotry is at home.
Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
The contest is like a bubble, think of how Olympics treats poor people i spose, there in the background.
I spent 4 winters there 84, 85, 89 and 2006 I still don't really have handle on it, I've seen some really ugly things and some beautiful things, but what you see is not necessarily what is going on.
I take anything an ex pat south african says with a grain of salt, I don't trust them.

On a lighter note I watched a highlight reel of the last few days, Faaarking hell!!
Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
Jesus guys come on. There's a small minority' of whites in SA hanging on, no, stuck and scared shitless with a stack of weapons in close reach. Any with an English passport left as soon as they could. There may be a few coastal hamlets that exude White on the water or maybe Ellis Park when the Springboks play. There is not much to analyse outside of the bubble. The generalisation of the white folk not digging the black folk that much is it. But considering where they have all started it's probably the best it will ever be.
I've worked in SA and with hundreds of SA's. They give no quarter. Hair curling racism, actually it's beyond that, the conversations are about becoming extinct.
Going to Yamba for a surf comp and drawing a conclusion about Australia...actually hang on.

And don't even think about being a coloured and living in South Africa
Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
Most of the South Africans I know could have left anytime they chose but stayed cause the love the place and as far as they were concerned they are all in it together. It's not black and white so much nowdays it's poverty verses privilege.Davros wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2017 10:16 amJesus guys come on. Well we obviously met people with vastly different opinions.
What were your opinions of Jo'burg?

Re: J-Bay Pro 2017
Fcuk it was almost too good last night. Just the locals really. Pumping! I paddled the length of the point from past Impossibles to the Boneyard four times and caught a total of eight waves and it felt like I'd caught a hundred. Went back to the 6'4 Spear because it was so windy and I didn't want to have a windy experience on the big 10, but the wind died back a lot as the afternoon went on, by twilight it was like a 5 knot offshore. No sharks! Though I did see a large shark the arvo before, way outside Boneyard, like a big one just moving slowly along. It didn't show any interest in coming in, just sorta wandering around then seemed to head out to sea into mid Bay, so I just thought fcuk it and kept surfing. Guys I talk with here reckon they see them frequently enough, just a sort of fact of life, maybe that's why I've been allowed to sit out the back so much by myself waiting for bombs. Fcuk I am stupid really.

Brother, men like you and me don't let the fear of sharks stop us, the ocean has us in it's clutches.
