I propose Nick and gstq having a cycling trip visiting Australia's primo east coast waves. Gstq's family can drive the support vehicle. Nick can inform gstq about the deep lore of surfing and surfboard design and gstq can teach Nick how to ride a bicycle.

Well this will be exciting!

Cranked, I rode McCoys exclusively for knocking on for ten years. I know how they go. Their most commendable quality is neutrality, which makes them predictable (in a good way) and dependable but also a bit dull. I'm afraid that your idea of the board rising up on its dome is nonsense. It simply doesn't happen

And if I read correctly, Geoff makes boards for surfers of limited ability?

Most surfboards have concaves where the dome is. I agree.....at least cranky still loves his McCoys. He seems to get the best out of them.

I don't think you realise the waves that this this occurs in, they are fast. Its an unforgettable feeling when it happens. Usually overhead, offshore, steep and hollow, or a fast little waves like temples, the board speed increases dramatically and the turns at high speed are loose and easy. Usually get at least someone in the water who comments favourably on the boards performance at the time. Its happened numerous times for me on really good, biggish days at secrets, impossibles in bali, pyramids and the mountain in roti, sanur, a few breaks at lakey. I have not felt the same thing on numerous other boards I've ridden at those breaks in similar conditions. McCoys are certainly not dull in those conditions.

I do find McCoys very dull in the average conditions in Perth and Sydney. So much so that I don't ride them there. They need the power of good fast reef waves in Indo, then they shine.

As I heard Mark Richards say about board design on the WSL, what you are trying to achieve is a board that is fast and turns easily. Unfortunately, those two design wants don't necessarily work together.

I will believe cranky before I believe GST. No offence, GST.....but you know....Bali vs Cornwall or where ever.

What elements of the dome make it rise out of the water Cranked? I mean, and I'm obviously no naval architect here, but if you think about a displacement hull (big, round bulbous) it's not designed to plane at all. Its speed is determined by its length in the water. A board with concaves, sure I can see, can feel how that generates lift. In contrast McCoys feel 'sticky'. I'm not saying they're slow; they're not. But they only have one gear and they don't have much release
