I'd actually dispute that......thats one of my main beefs with Rio: that it's a such a drag on performance. Way too many low heat totals where rubbish close-outs don't give surfers any opportunity.
Go look at the 2016 heat analyser....so many low heat totals. Yes, eventually someone makes sense out of it and scores big but overall the level of performance is severely depressed overall by the wave quality or lack of it.
That makes it a poor spectacle for viewing.

the WSL machinery is the entire problem with pro surfing.

When anyone can say with a straight face Rio should be in over JBay, there's a massive problem within comp surfing. No beachbreak – 'cept France – should be on the tour. full stop.

56 heats for the men is too much. Let alone asking it to be held in some shitty, shifty beachbreak full of pollution from a shit pipe. Style has to be incorporated into the criteria. the judging and scoring "machinery" has to be stripped right back, and rebuilt.

not more advocation for crap waves like rio to be included around the current flawed criteria model.

make no mistake. under the current WSL regime, we are watching pro surfing die right before our eyes.

It's a money thing. I saw something about surfing in Brazil going crazy, and making the surf co's lots of money. While that's going on, rio will be part of the tour.

Actually, nick might be able to confirm how the surf industry is going in Brazil in terms of revenue.

The Bondi Air Comp set a new standard. It actually looked better on tv than in real life.

If I was trying to run the business, I'd be looking how to keep Rio on the tour.

Reality is they don't have a mechanism to obtain one single dollar from any of those people.

May as well be an empty channel in cloudbreak ... same revenue.

I just watched the comp at snapper and then watched some old clips of occy and Curren at jbay. Everyone will have a different criteria of what good surfing is. It might be my age (50) and the fact that since I'm landlocked while waiting for surgery I've been having dreams of surfing.

I know you just can't compare the two waves. Though I can say is both waves require a different approach. If the judging criteria is not able to adjust itself to different lines for different waves then there is something incredibly wrong. The pure lines of occy and Curren, the controlled aggression, the speed. I just can't understand that this sort of style lies out of the judging criteria for jbay.

To me this is wrong therefore not worth following to closely. There is a fundamental flaw in the WSL if the criteria of judging can't adjust itself to the waves before it.

Please someone tell me that I'm wrong.
