Tips for grom trip?

Post by Gumby » Tue Oct 18, 2016 3:37 pm

Trying to suss out suitable locations for a surf trip to take my son on.
He's 11 and very independent in the surf now. Does it all himself. Riding a short board. Style/technique is coming along. Basic carves along the face, the odd floater/snap (slow-mo, small waves). Confidently paddles into 3-4 foot beach breaks.
Don't need anywhere epic or famous, just want a spot with a nice peeling shoulder/head-high (to him) wave where he can really get value out of the wave and clock some serious time practicing turns, compared to the usual one or two turns on an average local beachy.
I know I can't expect anything to ourselves (although please correct me if I'm wrong!), but any tips on when and where to keep the crowds to a minimum would be great.

I'm sure there are a stack of spots around the world, but cost-wise guessing this brings it right back to Bali or somewhere nearby?
And I know we're spoilt for choice in Oz too, but wouldn't mind the adventure of an overseas trip with him anyway.

Appreciate any tips.

ta

I know, but I'm serious.

easy resorts, shorter period swells, deepwater reefs with perfect shape.

Far more likely to get 3 foot surf in the Maldives than 6ft surf.

Couldn't think of a better place for a kid.

Maldives is good for a kid but gets quite crowded now.

I'd look at taking him to the Telos or mainland Sumatra in the off season. My bro took my nephew and a couple of his mates to the Telos in January and they had between 2-4ft every day and there was no one else there.

Took my son to Bali when he was 11. We surfed Medewi, Seminyak....he should have paddled out with me at Ulu.....it wasn't very big. Balian would be cool. Medewi was great for him till we went out at low tide. I turned around and he was standing on this big black Boulder with his board right in the middle of a bigger pile of black boulders. Wondering how to get in. Got quite a few scratches from the barnacles. That put him off a bit.

Actually got one morning of great rights at Seminyak with about four people.

Yeah Medewi is a fun easy wave but when my son and I were there saw some pretty gruesome barnacle cuts. Enterprising locals were doing a brisk business in booty rentals.

I can't believe they promote it as a learners wave. Head first into the rocks. It would be like learning to surf on the rocks at Crescent or Lennox.

The locals are even more enterprising down at Ulus. They'll sell your own booties back to you.
