Re: jbay
It's all about the points, and Fanning is a master at doing what needs to be done to get them. I have always been impressed by his surfing but never surprised. He's about as good as you can get going strictly by the book.

Re: jbay
thats orthodoxy.
by any measure he surfed JBay with more speed, power, precision and mastery than anyone else.
His win was undeniable.

Re: jbay
Fanning's win was the highlighted on the start of the ABC sport show Offsiders this morning - the host stated he watched his first ever live surf broadcast on Foxtel (found the red button and was "very impressed with the coverage"). lots of talk about the shark, the comeback, how great Mick is, sports story of the year, brave, etc blah blah

Except for the above the lip measure.steve shearer wrote:

Re: jbay
Don't need to go above the lip to get big scores - a 9 on rail is better to watch for me than a 9 from an air - but then I am not likely to land any airs soon.

Re: jbay
Love the guys that can combine it all with a bit of style......JJF? Jordy? And functional airs where they ride out into a big carve straight away....YEAH
Re: jbay
The difference is that JJF does carve in any size waves, barrel rides like demon and has mastery in the air. But under the insipid rules of the highly media managed WSL machine and us one eyed Aussies he clearly couldn't surf as well as an almost shark attack story from last year that just had to go full circle. The reality is that MF's surfing style is great but old by comparison even if comparing it with the much numerically older Slater who has always tried to be cutting edge and contemporary rather than rolling out the same old schtick. 2 big floaters and a renentry gets you +9 score? Crap.

Re: jbay
Sadly true.
Anyone else pick up the commentators keep harping on about how the new guys on tour need "to show the judges something new" to keep getting results, but plenty have been doing the same thing for over 10 years. On the same boards. At least Slater makes it interesting.
