Waxing the tail pad

Noticed Julian waxing his tail pad before the Margies final. Well at least I assumed it was wax as he'd been waxing his board at the same time and I don't now what else you'd want to rub on a tail pad.
Does anyone else do this?

Well perhaps that's his pre heat ritual as well, but fortunately they didn't televise that (and it obviously didnt help his result).
However just to clarify, I was referring to rubbing surfboard wax on the surfboard's tail pad. Saw him doing this in the locker rooms when they filmed him before the final.
That was Surfboard tail pad. No more disturbing mental images please.

Nick Carroll does it, as do most of the top 32. I still think it's something that only a moron would do but there ya go

Thanks for the insight GSTQ. Didn't know it was that common. Still seems weird to me. Why stick on a tail pad if its not going to give the grip you need? Keeps the tail pad sponsors happy I suppose.
I've just had a great idea for a new invention. Tail Pad Wax! Special secret formula (ie. normal surfboard wax presented in packaging that says "Tail Pad Wax" on the box).

It's Nick's insight, from his Ask Carroll thread. I called him a cretin then and goddam it I'd call him a cretin again if only the big fool would come back to us *sniff*

They also wax the top of their feet to drive onto the soles after paddling out.
Can't trust them.

There's something very strange, weird and unsettling about this thread, I don't know whether to laugh or cry

That's your vintage showing Beany. I never bothered with them until my current board. The shaper just fitted one as a matter of course. First tail pad i've ever had on a board. When i duck dive, the tail pad feels kind of like a legrope under my knee which can be disconcerting.
Not sure if they make a great deal of difference for the most part but there is an occasional situation where the extra grip probably helps.
Some guys get real security from them, back foot reassurance.
They do help protect the tail from depressions and compression of the blank around the stringer.
