North end of 7 mile, outside banks, feels the dodgiest of all to me when you're out there alone. Which is most times at that place.

Pretty solid short term pattern eh toots? To go out on a limb, it roughly appears to correspond with whale migration times. Fancy that, who would’ve thought? Seems to be a a longish tail period through early summer though that suggests another fish migration food source? North coast autumn seems like a safe bet for a surf.

I reckon that's how they work. That's why smart drum lines don't work. I reckon with drum lines sharks will start avoiding an area because it has a death vibe.
With smart drum lines what's different? All the other sharks have piercings?

It seems most likely the orcas scared away the whites in False Bay too.

What do you mean they don't work pinhead? there's a fair bit of evidence to suggest smart drumlines work pretty well at changing shark habits, especially with white sharks. White sharks who hit on the bait and are caught and tagged take a long time to return to near shore waters and almost never take another bait. Attacks in areas where smart drumlines are being used have pretty much ceased, even when they were happening regularly before that.

Re meshing holding dead sharks and thus scaring live ones away, well maybe that's what happened 60 years ago when sharks were still being caught in significant numbers in meshing. The most white sharks that've been caught during a single year of meshing off Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong this century was six. Most years there's only one or two.

Sharks do not think like people, it's a mistake to transmute your thinking on to their behaviour. Much better just to look at the behaviour. That's an added value of the smart drumlines, they allow tracking and alerting of the tagged sharks via the VR4G buoy arrays, so you can actually see something of what they do.

Ahhh Nick, anthropomorphising sharks was a joke.

But there does seem to be significant effect from drum lines and netting even when few or none of the target species are netted or take the baits.

They could do a trial removal and restoration of netting of Sydney beaches to further evaluate this hypothesis

The contracts for drum lines and net operators require them to be cleared every 48 hours at least so it's not all that likely sharks see their captured friends.

Do you have any theories about how or why they seem to work?

Plenty of gamefish stuck with dumb tags by game fishers in the NSW DPI program over the years have been recaptured. Are gamefish like marlin, tuna etc more "stupid" than sharks?
Would be interesting to see the shark recapture stats from DPI, though they are overwhelmingly makos and whalers.
