Wouldn't that make the decision easier? Damned either way so do what you want too.Davros wrote:Tough position, damned you do and damned if you don't.

lol tigers aren't man eaters
Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
You can hang anything off the back of a truck outside the Marlin and someone will admire it. And maybe steal it or set fire to it.
Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
This is a statistical threat list and therefore completely irrelevant - how many people in Northern NSW have had their legs bitten off by cows?swvic wrote:Humans
Mosquitoes
Tsetse Flies
Snakes
Scorpions
Hippopotamus
Crocodiles
Elephants
Cape Buffalo
Domestic Dogs
Deer
Tigers
Jellyfish
African Lion
Bees
Ants
Cows
Horses
Leopards
Sharks 75 attacks/year, 10 deaths
Bears
Black Widow/Brown Recluse
Bulls
Dingos
Wolves
I'd happily square up against a statistically more dangerous creature like an ant or a bee. I'd even take my chances with the most dangerous - another human before taking on a GWS.

Which ones, the big cats or sharks ?Braithy wrote:lol tigers aren't man eaters
Actually, don't worry about answering that, cause' they're both man eaters.

@pinhead. Yes, I know, but the people of N NSW have a choice. I wouldn't go wandering around the African plains knowing I'm at risk of becoming lion shit even though it might be a fun thing to do. Perhaps we should endorse a lion cull so I could do so in relative safety

That is the favourite retort these days Vic, but go do a little research into predator human interactions in Africa, especially the lion, and you'll see that if a lion makes a habit of attacking people or venturing too close to villagers or taking cattle they have no problems taking it out.
Heres an FAO paper if you can be bothered getting up to speed on it.

It's become a tired and inapplicable response to the problem we have here.

Or they could fence off the bits around the edges of the great plains that you'd like to wander around in.swvic wrote:@pinhead. Yes, I know, but the people of N NSW have a choice. All I can say is that Fanning was bloody lucky his encounter with 15 feet of teeth was with a pussy GWS who didn't like the taste of pro surfer (a very discerning animal at that) If it had been a big Tiger in JBay circa 2015 (I know - very unlikely based on National Geographic shark map) he would be lucky to be competing in the WSL Kneeboard comp this year.

Today's NSW reported north coast sightings of the rare and elusive GWS- from Dorsal page
Cape Byron 9.07 am
Lennox 9.08am
Kingscliff 10.43 am
Boambee 11.27 am ( two sharks)
Belongil 11.23 am
Angels Beach 12.07 pm ( 2.9 m, tagged)

Yeah, I know, Steve, but it will remain an emotive issue. To be honest, I might have a different opinion if there. Pro fishermen reckon we're in dangerous waters here and maybe if a couple of attacks were to occur, I'd have a different opinion about here too. I'm not going to condemn anyone if a cull were to take place, but I do fear it might be a precedent that could be easily followed elsewhere unnecessarily

Helluva lot of room between a "cull" and any number of mitigation measures which could be put in place.
So even trying to take all the emotive, lions on the savannah arguments out of it ; there's plenty of sensible measures that won't see GWS populations crashing.
