Been a few days since I read the article but I thought Steve was saying nets work but not advocating for their use but advocating for the smart drum lines?

The Alley at Currumbin was originally Shark Alley and Rainbow Bay used to be called Shark Bay.
Ben Cropp decimated the grey nurse population with power head spearguns back in the 60s.
The power head was a shotgun cartridge tipped spear. Used to hang out at the outer Cudgen Reefs

It's not about the change crabby, I've changed my tune as well.

It's about not being able to comprehend Steve's view when you held even more extreme views not too long ago.
do you think we should cull and net, now?

lol ... not too long ago? broskis, that was longer than a decade, maybe a decade and a half ago. are you saying shearer is 15 years behind my own evolution and growth as a human?
Evolution is slow, mate.
If you believe the theory that is.

my grandfather, dad and i all grew up in the ocean, all three of us live and lived in the ocean. my wife's grandfather, father and right back from about 5 generations of hawaiian water going people all lived in the ocean too.

why have none of us become more seaworthy vessels? seriously ... no webbed feet, no increased ability in moving in the water, no extra lung capacity etc ... instead, i have bones growing in my ears as my clumsy human body attempts to stupidly keep the water out of them.

according to evolution, generations of mine & my wife's dna & blood should dictate that our children should be adapted better for water living, yeah?

or is that a long bow to draw? according to the italian wall lizard findings, it "evolved" in less than 30 years. So why in a hundred years of ocean going ancestry between my wife and I ... are we not seeing even just a micro step in the direction of evolution by way of being more 'seaworthy'?

Nah mate, nothing that extreme.

I used to think, based on the data at the time, that GWS were still being caught at a rate that exceeded their reproduction, were critically endangered, and should be absolutely protected.
Almost to the point that I would've objected to the use of smartlines if there was even a small chance one would die before being relocated. And certainly to the point that the nets were a step too far, given the bycatch issues.

Now I think their population is pretty healthy and the smartlines appear to be just as effective, so I say have at it.

you reckon there's much to the theory we need the bigger 5m plus girls out there, they feed on juveniles (the ones more likely to bite us and pierce the femoral artery etc)

they caught a 5.5 metre one in the nets off coolum recently and a few marine biologists were saying the big ones are needed and good etc

was an interesting little chat.

I dunno crabby, I don't know that anyone can really answer that with much certainty.

Most of the really big ones would've been around before the ban, so they are ones that didn't pose a risk or take baits (evolutionary selection pressure, you see). To an extent they probably keep the medium size ones out of a given area.

Like that huge tiger at Burleigh that's been there since at least the mid-90s, it's probably keeping the bulls and smaller tigers away from the point.
Like imagine if you wanted to belly up to the buffet at the casino but Grooter was there going to town on the chicken wings, you'd back away so you didn't lose an arm in the confusion.

i would be like a little remora, attaching myself to grooter's back and filling up on all the flying bits of chicken from all the agressive gnashing.

hmmm... i wonder if at some stage a big white around nnsw got taken out and that's led to anarchy from all the little ones fuelled up on hormones and enthusiasm.

So, there was a decrease in shark attacks after netting was introduced in Sydney...Or another way of stating things might be -- there was decrease in shark attacks in the Sydney region after they stopped pumping the attaboir waste from Homebush straight out of the ocean outfalls of the eastern beaches.

When did they stop pumping? The shark management program (SMP) commenced in 1937 and there was a marked reduction in shark attacks soon after.

Anyway, anyone who wants to know the SMP needs to read this despite its length and complexity:

https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley ... pan3.10063

It's large but is probably the best analysis available

I presume he means when they put the outfall 7 klms out to sea in the 80s.

no. two distinct events. abbatoir waste pumped off the cliffs into the ocean ceased with the closing of the Homebush abbatoir and sale yards in 1988. So, it never was sent into the 7km outfalls. little bay outlet was probably the worst. animals parts all over the place.

and despite the outfalls, raw sewage is still pumped directly off the cliffs into the ocean at diamond bay. but plans are afoot to end that.

ah, they kept chumming the sharks way after that -- till 1988. lucky that had the nets in then.
they were chumming up at the Byron abbatoir, weren't they? when did that stop?
was it happening all along the coast at abattoirs?
