when i said deeper water, i only meant deeper than the surf gutter. like the schools of fish bombora talked about (see below) way out back a long long way from a breaking wave.

i'm not sure inshore fish stocks are thriving?

in regard to nick's attack, and many like it -- the WA one's especially. where they were bitten on remote beaches surfing solo, and certainly not being rescued. if that white was waiting for them to bleed out and come back ... why did they not come back? rather, the bodies were left with one, fatal bite.

i'm not sure anyone alive has painted them as bambi's of the deep. again, that's dramatic. whites are predators; apex killing machines. they're just not predators of humans, like you're trying to insinuate.

... if the attacks are rising bcos there's more whites and humans in the water the solution is a complex one. i can't see them being removed from the protected list. i can't see humans foregoing seafood to see what restoring the balance does either. i can't see people stopping to surf, dive, spearfish ocean swim etc to put them out of harm's way ...

bombora wrote:Hmmm Nick it may look like a lot of life around Sydney, but the salmon schools here and north have been noticably reduced. A few years ago schools would boil water across a football field size. They are now much smaller and scattered schools, which can still catch your eye because of the scavenging gulls but no denying a significant reduction in this smaller great white tucker. Big drop in bonito too, since they became the prime source of sushi rolls.
Too true about an increase in young sharks though.

bodies were mostly retrieved by other people.
Brad Smith was bitten in half, others without much left.

I'm not insinuating we are part of their preferred prey spectrum, but quite clearly white sharks are predators that attack human beings. Thats just what happens.

Not the timid, peaceful creatures that Madison claims they are. You'd have to have very dark rose tinted glasses to believe that, or have a career as a shark activist.

I agree the solution is complex.

tbh, I think the smart drumlines which are non-lethal and have almost no by catch are about the best compromise we have right now.

the best available science on fish stocks has been done by fisheries research and development corporations (FRDC), you can go through stock by stock assessments here:http://fish.gov.au

all the preferred prey items for white sharks are listed as being in good health, apart from snapper.
study done this year on preferred prey of juvey white and no surprise salmon and stingrays were right up there.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 131646.htm

dolphins also part of the diet, which Greenough believes is a big part of the reason there are so many whites here. He believes they are preying on dolphin pods.

It's also worth noting ; I'm not banging the cull drum but the QLD shark control program which has been going since '62 is an actual cull.

its stated aim is a program to remove large dangerous sharks from inshore waters.

it kills sharks.

People saying 'we don't want a cull" are in a state of delusion, because this is an actual cull.

people have been tirelessly fighting those nets since their inception, for that reason. the gov don't want to reduce their tourism rev, though.

in all the attacks, by memory everything i've ever read is it was one bite attacks? just much bigger sharks doing it in the west? maybe that swimmer at cottesloe was bitten again and again. fuschia, i can't really remember that far. but these east coast attacks have all been subs and juvies, exploratory bite and release, yeah?

doesn't matter tho ... the solution we agree is gonna be a complex one, and people are going to get bitten in the meantime

yeah, can't see QLD pulling those nets, or at least not without replacing them with drums.

I just find it ironic that people say there will never be a cull because of popular opinion when there has been a culling program in place for 60 years.

A whale carcass has attracted great white sharks and sparked a feeding frenzy off the NSW coast.
Crowds gathered at Bulli, south of Sydney, after the carcass washed up against the rock platform on the northern side of Bulli Point.
Erase.

Seasonally is a relative thing. Southern tourist loving warm August seawater gets eaten. Then what?

humans rarely like to face the extent of their actions. it sounds much better to say, 'we're installing shark protective nets'; than 'we're indiscriminately culling sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles out the back'.
