Any other brilliant tips? If you want to avoid the flu, don't breathe?
Seriously though, it'll be interesting to see at what point the increasing amount of attacks/encounters will precipitate action and what that action will be.
Not that long ago, if a few big whiteys were hanging around a couple of the local fishos would go take care of the problem.
Under current protection status you'd expect more juveniles and more and bigger adults, leading to increasing chance of encounter/attack.

Hold all contests in the UK? Don't think there are too many attacks there.steve shearer wrote:Faultless logic.Braithy wrote:if you want to avoid a shark, shearer. stay dry. simple!

Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
For the record, I'm not seriously suggesting that. But I'd like to see some kind of tagging program happening so they could at least see if big GWS are taking up residence in certain areas at certain times.
Why for instance are we seeing so many here when a hundred K's up the coast on the Goldy there is nothing?
There are weekly encounters happening here. Is that one shark? A few passing through?
Why was a GWS here in Feb well outside of whale migration season?

i don't believe you. you've alluded a few times to it now, especially since your backyard has many currently occupying it.
killing something. anything! so a few humans can keep their wave count up for a hedonistic pursuit?
it's a bit on the nose, ay.

I can't believe all you f^kkz fell for it. This is just a classic marketing tactic by the WSL to increase future viewer numbers of their silly little comps. They sent that f6kka out there people. It was a set up. I would also not be surprised if Tony Abbott was also involved. To take the media attention off Bronny and her helicopter trip. Open your eyes people.

Braithy, just about everything humans do is hedonistic and unnecessary, including typing this shit on a computer. Keeping cats and dogs is unnecessary and hedonistic, ie done for our pleasure. They're predators, you're feeding them animals that have been killed every single day.
Humans have been swimming, surfing, fishing, using the ocean since time began. And they'll continue to do so.
If a dingo started roaming the streets of Currumbin taking kids out randomly, we'd shoot it. That doesn't impact on dingo numbers.
If it can be shown that a shark is setting up shop somewhere and posing a danger then I'm for tagging it, moving it on, or as a last resort taking it out.
I'm not into nets or other indiscriminate killing, even though statistically that is the only thing proven to reduce the risk.
But yeah, it's close to home. I surfed with Tadashi regularly. Don't know Matt but know plenty of people who do. I know the person who watched him turn grey and die three times on the beach while they rescuscitated him. It's traumatic for a lot of people around here. If there are things that can be done then lets investigate it.

I tend to agree.... If it is evident there is a couple of them causing issues... take em out and use them for food. So what.

I reckon the shark just went for a nibble on his leggy then got tangled in it and freaked out to a certain extent. No bite marks on the board, no bite marks on fanning. Yeah pretty hectic but if the shark wanted a foot her would have had it pretty easy.

Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
There's been a big GWS tagging program in Oz for several years. Bulls have been tagged too. On the east coast they are electronic tags which are monitored by a series of receiver buoys set up and down the coast, both near shore and up several waterways. Boffins have already learned quite a lot about their movements. One thing think I remember is bulls leave the harbour when the water drops below 20C. And head north.steve shearer wrote:For the record, I'm not seriously suggesting that. It's not real time marking though, takes some hours I think to get info back. Almost all the GWS's electronically tagged on east coast have been the teenagers which are responsible for the majority of attacks, sorry, encounters. The tagged bulls have been those nasty bastards 2.5m to 2.9m long.
I can see in the future a real time electronic tagging program with receivers dotted along the coast to track sharks. If there's a willingness to spend the money. And there would always be sharks which didn't get tagged, or the tag failed.
PS certainly a whitey which attacked Fanning, you can see the distinctive notch at the top of its tail fin.
Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
In retrospect, the shark did not bite Mick. I don't think that in any way reduces the potential danger of that encounter. I'm pretty sure the bite Mick option was definitely in play when that shark went in. In fact, the shark went in and bit the first bit of Mick it encountered. It just happened to be his legrope.

Bombie, do you know where the nearest receiver buoy to Ballina is located?
