My 10-year-old son has been showing a bit of interest in surfing lately. We've got an O&E 7' foot thing that he took out at Wanda yesterday, and had a blast. I took him down The Farm today - absolute onshore rubbish, but I'd committed - and we took my neighbour's 5'6" Mullet Biscuit. He went okay on it. He said to me, "I think four fins is my thing." Anyway, we can probably borrow this for a little while but when I do get him his own, what do youse reckon? Any thoughts that aren't tin foil quality?

Tell him when he can swim a mile non stop you will get him a board. That’s what my old man said. Motivation when you’re 10 years old. So I did it, then he bought me a $20 dinged up knee board. Couldn’t get my arm around it and it was a piece of shit hand made dog of a thing. I didn’t know it was a knee board though and stood up on it. Learning curve was prolly stifled to some extent. Had to save up my own coin to get a McCoy double flyer round pin.

Can he swim a mile? Would he be ok in a strong rip dragging him out with no board. Is he a strong swimmer?
That shit does help aj. I didn’t realise at the time but it did save my life a few times. Go the tough love route.

Oh yeah, that’s what I’m after. How do you expect me to make bank if I’m shelling out for a brand new board?

Nah, not a mile yet, but he’s done a couple of Nippers seasons.

Well tell the little cnut to pull his finger out and get swimming till he can do the deed and deserve his second hand JS or whatever. Make him earn it, he’ll appreciate it all the more if he loves it.
