Nearly all my friends had moved up to the mid and north coasts by about 1970. And there was the tragic story of a mate and his girlfriend who disappeared near Varanasi in about 1970 and were never heard from again.

They owned half of a 100 acre property (another friend owned the other half) about 15k inland from Kempsey.

It was errie when we went to visit as their house and all their belongings were left untouched for decades. We would look around at all their clothes and possessions and be overcome with emotion.

We were lied to about weed and LSD
Who lied to you and what about?
In mid 60s the counter culture media (including Tracks) was heavily promoting "tune in, turn on and drop out". It was our manta.

To combat this the established media and government campaigned heavily about the evils of drugs, and it was primarily LSD and marijuana they targeted as harder drugs were not generally available and not used widely in any case.

But they did not really distinguish the differences between hard and soft drugs.

So when heroin came along (with the American R and R) in Oz thousands of my generation had already extensively used LSD and marijuana without any bad effects, and when we tried heroin found it euphoric and used it as a party drug.

This went on for a few years and we slowly found out how different it really was, too late for many. If the message had differentiated between hard and soft drugs a lot of lives may have been saved

Tracks was first published in October 1971

Surf culture was just slipstreaming a generation.

That late! It felt like it was always there. So it was just Oz in the early sixties and Nation Review in 1970.

Oz was not that serious at times, but Nation Review was, my generation really thought we had arrived when that came out.

Oh, and how could I forget, Rolling Stone in 1967

Fcuk! I just got a crazy board shaped

9'8" x 20.5" x 3.5" Christenson off a Twig file, low entry to foiled vee bottom pintail quad.

Chris lives the classic gypsy shaper's life, orders collect at various points on the globe, he comes into town and tunes in with the machine etc, finish shapes a pile of boards, then depending on what's happening either heads off to the next port of call or goes into re-design mode. I think he's off to the Goldie now. Meanwhile he's left me this thing, a full on bombie killing spear.

Yes! Yes it is. I was thinking of riding it on my next trip to Wales. I’m expecting about 150 kilojoules. Trouble is, I’m not sure which fins to “run”, maybe the Hot Goat v2 quad set with the luminescent green tips, the same ones Twig didn’t use at Nazare yesterday. Definitely wearing a wetsuit though. I feel safer in a wetsuit, it’s like a suit of armor against the ocean except you don’t sink to the bottom, the way you probably would if it was an actual suit of armor.

Phew! Glad we got that straightened out

Hold on, I was thinking of Iggy's and Loofy's camping trip.

Oh fcuk! I forgot, I will be pairing it up with an inflatable “pull” vest and also an impact suit with the foam inserts so I don’t break any ribs going “over the falls”
