It's super bold! I still don't really know why anyone other than surfers would ever wanna watch it though.
Yeah super bold as you say. I believe it would give the owners the best chance of maximum return on their investment but I also believe its a complete abandonment of what surfing means to a lot of people.

A lot of things in life are not about the fcuking money: taking surfing, of all sports, down that track is a very sad moment for surfing. The very best result would be for the surfers to take a stand, and say no, this is not what surfing is. That would make them legends.

ha ha well the current owner of the world tour has pissed a bit over $100m up against the wall in four and a bit years trying to keep the whole thing going in the manner to which it has become accustomed, that is very much about the fcuken money.

the thing they risk is exposing the already tenuous link between pro surfing and actual surfing culture, stretching it even further till it maybe snaps. That would fracture the unity among the pros which has been shaken a bit by the thought that some of them are a bit disposable all of a sudden. The whole thing could come apart pretty quick.

But I dunno, I kind of don't trust my instincts on this, I know my own picture of surfing evolved at a very different time and the way I see surfing may not be too confluent with some sci fi future version. Maybe they can co-exist!

Still don't know why anyone but surfers would bother watching CTs though.

They are fcuking pro surfers: ie they are getting paid to surf.

You think they are going to take a stand against capitalism to go dig holes, or program computers?

Even Rasta the great(est) Pro Soul Surfer of all time was always super careful to never say a bad word about surfing commercialism.

People don't shitt on their paydays Cranked.....or if they do we make martyrs out of them like Ed Snowden.

If they just manage to lock that down and solidify it that would be a massive leap forwards imo.

The WSL embrace of KellySlaterWaveCo is partly an acknowledgment of that truth. They can't sell the current product, therefore they have to change the product.

They're advising the owner, who is a billionaire.

About the same time that Dirk Z began to get involved in pro surfing, he and his brothers did quite a bit of divesting and changing their games. Dirk stepped away from Ziff Brothers Investments and started his own operation, Ziff Capital Partners (still holds some money in ZBI). It's the sort of thing Teneo advises rich people on -- how to change it up etc. So they've probably been an item almost since Teneo was founded.

WSL represents a significant investment on Ziff's part and it only makes sense that he would call on his corporate advisers to try to figure out how to turn it around.

So it is not rocket science, it is possibly however the weirdest period in professional surfing history.

True Steve, and that's what will probably happen, but my point still stands. I'm with Tracks when they refused to report on, nor acknowledge competitive surfing. That was in those early years when people thought they could change the world.

Capitalism is ugly and soulless, and fcuking rampant.

And yeah, I chose the money path, but I felt a lot better when I was working for places like the Dept of Indigenous Affairs (10 years), TAFE (5 years), Dept Agriculture (3 years), than doing shit for Banks and Insurance companies.

The bit in bold. Nick, you have a way of succinctly and clearly reaching to the heart of the matter. A suitable analogy, in many ways, might be in the martial arts: that is, the relationship between the traditional martial arts (Karate Judo, Jujitsu) and the UFC.

Two runs each, first runs start at 7pm on the dot, the whole thing is done by 9. It's extreme liposuction for the CT with the holy grail of predictable timings for live TV. People will watch any old shit if it's plonked in front of them in a coherent and easy to digest package. They'll probably ditch the ocean events after a year or two once the pools are fully up to speed

yeah but nah.

more like half-pipe snowboarding.

a kind of dinky add-on for the Olympics version of snowboarding.

They've got to look beyond the niche, surfer audience. They know what that delivers in terms of audience numbers and it's clearly not enough. Tinkering with the number of surfers and trying to put them on good waves at the best spots will probably work in so far as maxing out that niche, surfer audience but it ain't gonna do much to sell it to the wider public while we still have long lulls, incomprehensible scoring, impenetrable commentary etc etc.

We'll meet here again on 19 September 2027, oh-nine-hundred-hours my time, and see who was right

It's never going to appeal to the mainstream Godsave....especially not in a pool.

The mainstream has one connection to surfing: some kind of nature-God dancing on the ocean waves. Take that romantic notion away, which is what surfing is being used for as marketing tool and why so many adult beginners are into it and it's nothing.

I put a six pack of Coopers on it. I'll collect next time I'm in the UK.

Yeah I dunno if the wave pool will cause its appeal to grow among non surfers. They'll very likely go "Fcuk the only interesting thing about surfing was the big waves and scary sharks etc" and tune out entirely

Surf culture, well I'm right there with shearer, it is based completely on the idea of freedom in a natural unencumbered coastal shoreline paradise, wave pools have no place yet in any of that, they are not a better, cleaner world now are they. Anyone who reckons they can run 'em as a sort of adjunct to surf culture, I think is being seriously disingenuous, probably even completely ignoring their own experience in surfing

But you know, it's the only thing that hasn't already been tried, so what the hell? It's not our money after all.

And yet, UK telly regularly broadcasts track cycling live. The sport of nerds, drawn to the bosom of the mainstream following Olympic success

I actually think that view is a bit outdated to be honest. Do you know how many people identified as a surfer in the UK last year? 1.3 million, up 300,000 in just one year, and up from 500,000 in the mid 2000s. The awe is gone, the world is now a surfer. They just don't give a shit about contests

Don't think we sell that muck in the UK. You might need to bring your own
