Waiting for the ABS to post its latest sport and rec stats, but I suspect they will show a continuation of the trend of the past 20 years or so, ie an aging of the surf population. The last report, from 2011/12, suggested there were more surfers over 55 than under 15, and way more over 45 than under 25. The core is 35/45. Total is 226,000 of a total beachgoing population of about 3.5 million.

The big unstated figure is surf tourists, ie surfers in Australia who are not Australian citizens.
For some reason I find this terrifying

Yeh pretty much mature age recruits (male and female) together with older retiring age, both of which didn't exist in the 70s would explain the aging population I think.
When I was a grom in the 70's expected retirement age was 30, there just wasn't anyone over 30 most likely due to the shortboard revolution. Probably different on the east coast, first time I went to hawaii I was blown away that I was often the youngest in the water, different world from vicco.

Cudgen Headlands Surf Lifesaving Club had a great collection of square V Bottoms with big flexy sabre fins back in the seventies. All the clubbies were older brothers of our crew but they all gave up surfing when the boards got under 7'.

steve shearer wrote:Speaking of sharks, hows the little rush from the white shark here as a surfer paddles for a wave. Tiny little 2ft wave at North Wall in 3-4ft of water.

News Limited has got hold of it. It's now a "large shark considering launching a vicious attack". Fuckwits.

Join the club. It's the scent of our own deaths in our nostrils.

I enjoyed the latest Occ-Cast, with Laura Enever. I think she is Occy's most articulate interviewee.
Good stuff about her experience in the Jaws Big Wave event.

Have you noticed death smells strangely like a RSL buffet?

The entire NSW board of the RSL stepped down yesterday on the heels of repeated allegations of misuse of finances.

So yeah, death.

Funny what a hippy will lend his name to to make a buck.

Still, did you see him bodysurf, he was like a fccckn dolphin.
