Don't understand why they don't just make a decent midlength that works well for 80-90% of surfers.

IMHO the 7'-8' McTavish Carvers are as good as you can get.

This is correct, Cranky. I ride mine very regularly and I also have a Carver Fish which performs similarly well in slightly more critical conditions. 7'11" and 7' respectively.

Pipe forecast still looking pretty good. Opening day swell solid NW, maybe shifting a bit north in a hurry, then a high quality 6-8' plus very W swell around 12/13, then a followup around the 17th.
