Imagine the God status if he had walked away after winning Pipe.

Imagine if Filipe had made it through to the last day. He could have won.

That would have silenced his critics. King of Pipe.

Yeah, that would have been a nice exclamation mark.

On the subject of not running the other day, its mostly keyboard warriors that are doing all the stomping of feet and yelling. A few f the Hawaiian guys were keen to go, but if you looked at the conditions (watched live footage on Surfline etc),it was quite apparent that there weren't enough contestable wave to run a contest in. Although there were some absolute gems, it was mostly wash-throughs and close-outs. Less than ideal conditions for running a round in.

So better than 90% of the surf they competed in last year, which was mostly 100% dogshitt.

They should have definitely gone out.
Good surfers find the waves in those conditions.
Seperate the wheat from the chaff.
As if JJF and Jack Robbo wouldn’t have found waves out there.
That’s how you find out who is actually superior.

Especially when those waves they would have found were potentially some of the most incredible waves on Earth.

Imagine seeing JJF in a 12ft Pipe Cavern, getting spat out.

They dogged it.

Imagine if they counted your top 5 waves at Pipe, provided it was consistent enough.
JJF would be untouchable out there.

One of the incongruities of comps and that one in particular was how high the scores were in some heats for both surfers and how lame others were. Of course you can never get the last minute scores in a wave pool.

So like most years at the Portugal closeouts?

They reset the bar on every heat ... an 8.5 in one heat could be a 7 in another, but so long as the scores are consistent in each heat, it doesn't matter if a previous heat was scored lower or higher.

I watched Pipe on the Surfline cams for around 30 minutes the other day, and it was very inconsistent. With a maximum of two to three decent waves in half an hour, its not really a level playing field ... it becomes a quest for priority. Anyway, the waves are apparently going to be pumping in the next couple of days, so the great unwashed and keyboard legends alike may get to see the crème de la crème in some caverns.

Sure but a few heats had the runner up getting 8s. Next couple of heats the winner would breeze through with a combined total of 6 or 7. Runner up would have a combined total of 4.5.
Just the luck of the draw.

Rory Russell was saying at the Pipe event earlier in the season that Pipe has always tended to be on for 45 minutes and then off for 45.

Thats why I've always been in favour of longer overlapping heats so surfers get more opportunities.
