Pete Mel is 51 years old and there's not a one of you has ever looked down at something like that, ever in your lives, and you never will.

Pete was an ice addict, he would tell you he still is.

He got clean, his family stood by him. That wave woulda come through in any case but the fact that he was there to ride it, and his son John was in the channel telling him he should just come in after it, that shit is legendary.

I remember hearing about that when that whole Blasphemy Rottmouth blog was around. Basically it said that all the Mavericks guys were ice heads. Always thought it was an urban myth but there you go. I just hope when Loof paddles out there with his boy. That he’ll steer clear of that stuff. Ice doesn’t give you vision guys.

They weren't all ice heads but some of the Santa Cruz guys, including Flea, Pete, and Vince Collier went down that mineshaft. It's not a secret of any kind, it's been widely covered in surf and other media over the years. Sadly Vince is no longer with us. Flea and Pete in particular have earned a lot of respect and good will from a lot of people by coming clean without reservation and going on to do good things for other people in need.

sure about that Nick?

his bio says he was born in 1975.

which makes him 45, turning 46.

either way, still amazing.

Looks like Mavs guys have found a new take-off spot there, just outside the ledge.

See Mel and Twiggys wave.
