The pubs I went to in London were pretty bloody good. I never went to some grim backwater pub though- where were you Steve? Was it like that pic Drailed put up? I reckon some Aussie pubs on the periphery of cities (say, Liverpool) would be just as grim.

Outback/Regional pubs are shit, don’t let Red Dog fool you. I like the open feel and the ice cold beer they sell, but if you have any ethnic qualities, definitely treated/looked at differently. Probably fine as a white fella.

Irish pubs are grand, of course.

Pubs in the Sydney CBD were great in the 60s and 70s. They had incredible character and there was nearly one on every corner.

Then they started closing them down by shifting the liquor licences into the suburbs. Tons of sterile mediocracies were the norm.

There’s some pretty depressing ones in Aus. Poker machines, high viz, five kinds of super crappy Aussie lager and English style decor in Aussie climate. Add some Jimmy Barnes on the duke box and the nightmare begins.

the difference is: you walk out of one of those pubs and you are in Australia.
You walk out of an English suburban pub and you're in England.
