Taking part in a "surf lit" discussion.
hopefully I don't get in a stink with a squirrel.

Re: Byron bay surf festival
Is there any 'surf lit' written by women? I have seen one book about how surfing 'changed the life' of a group of women, but that was an autobiography style book rather than fiction/literature.
Serious question; triggered by the 'surf lit' phrase.
Does Puberty Blues count as surf lit?

I might check in on Carrolls discussion.
wonder if they'll take questions from the audience.

Re: Byron bay surf festival
It is on from 24 October to 26 October.
I see that they are attempting a world record for a party wave. That won't be hard - just about every wave up there during those 3 days will be a party wave

The last jumping castle I was near an adult poo'd in it.
Hopefully it's a little case of history repeating

Perhaps Shearer or Braithy would be able to act as proxies and ask questions of NC on behalf of the Realsurf cube monkeys?steve shearer wrote:they're weird phenomena.

Re: Byron bay surf festival
hmm women writing surf lit
C Bede Maxwell, you maybe wanna try her first. Mrs Maxwell wrote a superb book about surfing in Australia. It's called "Surf" and it was published in the early 1950s. I'm humbled to walk in her shoes.
Rebecca Olive is a wonderful and very accessible writer, you can search her blog on the Internet, she writes from the POV of a very intelligent and passionate woman surfer who is determined that her voice be heard but is somehow vulnerable and caring at the same time, v worth your time.
Cori Schumacher is a super intelligent, very spiky and angry woman surfer who's probably a lot better than you are at surfing and a very engaged thinker, nothing scares Cori, though I am yet to see her confront herself as a writer, if and when she does I think she might be the best writer the sport has seen.
I'm hoping for some intelligent questions from the audience at Byron, it's the best thing about these ludicrous events, the contact with other humans.

Your a brave man, Nick.
Hopefully it won't spiral out of control like a Realsurf Thread.
Just don't mention Daylight Saving if Steve turns up.

Re: Byron bay surf festival
channels and othes, just be aware that TC and I will only engage with questions that relate to the book I wrote. This won't be the forum for free floating and irrelevant stuff. there won't be much time and others may have questions as well.channels wrote:Perhaps Shearer or Braithy would be able to act as proxies and ask questions of NC on behalf of the Realsurf cube monkeys?steve shearer wrote:they're weird phenomena.

How about "did daylight savings impact how your book was written?"Nick Carroll wrote:channels and othes, just be aware that TC and I will only engage with questions that relate to the book I wrote. You obviously hold no fear for the grammar and spelling police Braithy...... ...I like that word - can anyone else use it ? or would you prefer to keep it all to yourself ?Braithy wrote:this has the makings of being tardastic. when is it, i might be available?
Re: Byron bay surf festival
Thanks nick, will check those writers out. Surfing lit does seem very male bonding/self challenging focused. Like surfing I guess, so no surprise.
Watching 'riding giants' on SBS and it mentions briefly the impact of the movie gidget', guess there is an influential fictional woman surfer...
