Wow.... well done Roy . 3-)
Since reading about one of his boards a long while back that he wanted a unique price relating to a cosmic vibration or mathematical indivisible number or something really weird .... (it was over $1.3m anyway and there were no "0"'s in the number ) I always thought he's going to find someone who is going to pay that kind of money and that specific price , because it was all so wacky and makes a good story for the type of purchaser !!

They're good looking works of art -and they can be ridden ,- but most of all comes with a wacky story from a really unique individual who's clearly spent a lot of time and a lot of passion on his art/skill .
Man , that is art ...... being able to sell it like that .

Classic .... I hope it's all true , and I hope it was that "crazy" number .

Congrats Roy! That was a beautiful play on the psychology of marketing.

Nobody pays the actualy "cost" of something, they pay the "value" of something. That value is purely subjective to the individual. Therefore, technically, with the right elements you could have waited long enough for the right individual who sees the value of your board at that price tag. Eventually, that person will see it, desire to own its value, and buy it.

I don't see the same value, because I like fibreglass shortboards that come under a grand a pop. I also like surfing shortboards compared to olo style boards. All I see in that boards value is an endless mortgage for something I can't sleep in or under, or store my things. Probably a purchase that would ruin my marriage, and be seen as a kind of gambling addiction. The peak of an impusive surfboard buying addiction.

Then again, to the uber rich who have all the money in the world and can buy anything they want (within reason), value is everything. It stops being about practicality, price, etc., and everything about value. Its because noone else has it, its because its a "relic", its because its made by a master craftsman who will only produce so many a year, or whatever othe reason. They buy the value, because the money means very little to them. I'm sure bragging rights come into play too. Everyone I know whos mega rich aspired to be there because they always compared themselves to other people and figured they would be doing something meaninful with their lives if they're "above the rest".

Still, the pure fact that you turned a few trees into over a million dollars sais your marketing strategy worked. Well done!

The prospective purchaser has only paid a deposit ... he's waiting on a building and pest inspection prior to settlement.
The moving finger writes and having writ moves on ... now all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel even half a line ... nor all thy tears wash out a single word of it.

This showed up in the mail, courtesy of Roy's 3-D printing and a fellow RS member, who can't test it for a while.

tested this morning in cleanish 3ft runners in board as above.

Had no idea how this fin was going to go, none.

It was very, very free. Loose. A close to finless, drag-free feeling.

Completely changed the handling, reaction time and turn dynamics of the board, in not a bad way.

Board was now super fast and pivotal, wanted to go straight up and down.....and had zero anchoring effect....you had to stay right over the board through turns....it frequently went through the turn without me as I figured out the reaction time of the fin....which led to plenty of keystone cop arm waving as I recovered.

It didn't like being pushed through a long hard carving arc...it wanted to draw shorter, snappier arcs, although if you carefully weighted rails it would draw the turn as described.

Altogether a very fun, freeing, pleasureable sensation. Totally different to what I expected, which was nothing.

I could imagine the fin suiting a board with a narrower tail, as is Roy's design philosophy.

I'd like a range of fins, one slightly bigger with more area for when you need more hold.

Altogether though, Roy is at the forefront of a revolution in terms of 3-D printing and small scale manufacturing and I reckon this product works. I had a blast on it and can't wait to get out on it again.

Thanks for the feedback Steve, sounds interesting.

Any chance we could do a more surfboards type experiment on it and send it around??

Couldn't nearly all of that be explained by the fact it's an upright, pivoty template?
I would've shifted it all the way back in the finbox.
