QuikPro Forey

Post by steve shearer » Wed Feb 19, 2014 1:58 pm

GFS is throwing down a cyclone in perfect position.

Eventually the drought must break.

You'd have to think this long flat spell was in their favour.

I will splooge tears of joy if I see Dane Reynolds surfing perfect Snapper unencumbered by hordes of cnuts.

Nah, I actually think Summer is about to start in earnest.
Just harking back to the previous chat about funky seasons.

That thing last night didn't get done until 9:30.
Those bigger schools I mentioned came north and sat off where you were last night, the outermost outcrop.
Looked like solid tuna.

oh yeah, I meant I haven't quite been able to intersect the feeding fish and baitball yet.

They've been just out of casting range.

Poppers are so 2013. Try a big skimmer or swim/stick/pencil bait!

I'll be out of town during this years Quiky-Pro ... so my bet is ... it'll be pumping.

Actually ... I'll be away for the vast majority of March ... so it'll be pumping the whole time.

Missing the pro-show is one thing ... but I'll miss the Kirra Teams Challenge too ... dammit.

That will probably be held at Kirra for the first time in a long time ... just to rub salt into the wound.

Been thinking about this. And ... I dunno. I use to amp on watching Dane surf. When he's putting it all out there in a comp, he's exciting and easily one of my favourite guys to watch in a sea of vanilla 'scoring rides'.

I think he's lost a step (thru gaining some pounds), and his massively unique turns and rail work of 2-3 years ago, seems to have morphed into lazy throwaway turns with (maybe?) no intention of making the wave or keeping any flow to it.

To make heats at snapper you have to finish your waves and be continually active on it. Dane's surfing (in the past at snaps) is to go really fast then bust something really implausible. The judges hate him going fast because someone like mick will pack 3 or 4 tight arcs on the exact same section of wave Dane is accelerating through.

It'd be great to see him just complete a wave. Then complete a heat then go on a run and take the whole thing. I'm crying for it. I'm also crying to win powerball. Only powerball is actually possible.

I was feeling that way a couple of weeks ago.
Dane's getting fat, we're all sliding down the razors edge of mortality towards obliteration.
Dust to dust.

But somehow, hope keeps springing eternal, against all evidence to the contrary.

It'll only take one wave to refill the well.

Surely he's got that in him.

Anyway latest Access G looks nice. It puts the focus of low pressure development in the SPCZ then drifts it into the North Island corridor. That tends to produce long range, clean as a whistle three foot surf, with the Snapper multiplier dishing up three to five foot growers if the bank is premium. three or four scoring opportunities per heat.
Dane is typically better with closer range trough or easterly dip tradewind swells which offer tons of waves per heat. Lulls seem to confuse him and bring on anxiety attacks as feels the weight of expectation of the crowd. If he finds an early inspiring rhythm and keeps moving then it's party time.
All this has to happen on a low-ish tide afternoon with golden sunlight angling in from the northern quadrant.
He needs precise conditions to fire. Any variation from the recipe tends to produce a disappointing souffle.

lol ... see. There's more variables than powerball going on here.

I can't stop the thought of terrific swell and energy not being accompanied by 25knt northerly winds.
