My rashy is killing me
Started surfing in a rashy for the first time 3 days ago but i'm having dramas sliding around inside it on my chest while paddling. It sticks to the board o.k. Just not to my chest. It's like laying on a slab of moss. In the process it's also cheese-grated a layer of skin off the bottom of my sternum to the point of bleeding, so i'm sitting here in balian bali having a dry day while the surf is 4 foot.
I've actually got a short and long sleeve, tried both, one is slimier than the other but both crap. I may have to take the long expensive trip back to kuta to buy a short sleeve wetty vest.
So what's the go with rashies? Everybody uses them, they can't all be sliding off their boards. Brand, fabric or something else?

I don't have that problem with mine. Even cheapies. I DO however, make sure they're a tight (stretched) fit.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

I'll wear out my welcome in no time now
Yeah the rashy could be a size thing but i'll probably consign them both to snorkelling for now and get a vest.

Hey mentone fcuk the rashy off. Why are you wearing it? Prevent rash? Well that ain't working.
Prevent sunburn? Wear a normal t shirt, preferably white.
Because everyone else does? Well not everyone else does. I don't.
Rashies! They originated as rash protection under wetsuits. Then they morphed into sunburn protection which may be the single biggest driver of people going back to the beach in the past 15 years. That's great and all but so what.
Loose hi tech short sleeved super light t shirts totally kill the tight fitting "rashie" in a surfing context.

Yes purely for sun protection. Always surfed just boardies in warm water, but at 55 the consequences are becoming evident. Looks like i've come to the right place, thanks for the replies.Nick Carroll wrote:

Not sure why they have barbed wire installed around Newport SLSC ... but the towels in the background look like they're drying nicely.

Re: My rashy is killing me
Funny this is a bone of contention around our house at the moment.
My son hates wearing them and says nobody wears them at the beach.
My beef is that he then wants to use all the sunscreen on his back,
There is also the -all the core guys don't wear them factor as well.
And the-if the core guys all wore their underwear sticking out of the top of their pants would you too factor.
Oh, yeah. They already do that and get tats as well. So my line of argument against getting skin cancer is under assault from all corners it seems.
Now I have actually been wondering about how effective those hitech synthetic t shirts might be but I've got a fairly good couple of rashies and they don't rash me much so I'm sticking with them for now.

Re: My rashy is killing me
I can't surf with a rashy on either - keep slipping around under chest too. I gave up the ghost and either wear a long sleeve 0.5mm wettie top for the sun protection or if having a quick surf (if it's small) on a hot day then maybe just a t-shirt - but sometimes my hands get caught up in those when paddling for waves. Wearing 0.5mm wettie top is the goods though in a wide range of water and outside temps.

Re: My rashy is killing me
In general I have always thought that people whoregularly go bare back in the full sun must have rocks in their head, unless they enjoy have cancers cut of of their backs. Anyway recently one early evening when the sun had lost most of its bite, I decided to go for an ocean paddle (not SUP) bare back. Never again. Basically I wore both my nipples off and it has taken days of intensive nappy cream treatment to get any sign of my perky titties back.
Good news is I have now grown perky pink fresh nipples like a 16 year old girls.
Its a 1mm or 2mm wetsuit vest for me.
Oh the other thing I don't understand: Those retro vests with the zip down the front that the hipsters wear open like a bateman cape?? That is f`kk!n gay. Worse than the open button up shirt when surfing.

Hipsters. They just keep giving us reasons to hate them.
Re: My rashy is killing me
+1 for tight rashie, it's no help if its loose.

Re: My rashy is killing me
None of these problems in the bracing waters of the UK: Fullbody wetsuits all round - no rash, no sun burn (though this would probably also be the case without the suit), and no 16 yearold nipples on show.

well you could fix that by snipping nipple holes in your wetsuit like that scene in a clockwork orange
