Best Australian Surfer EVER!

Post by Spoon » Wed Nov 10, 2004 1:49 pm

OK boys and girls. The weather is average so have a think. Who is or was the best Australian surfer. All round performers in all types of conditions. Is it someone from the current crop or do you go back to Midget or Nat.
Who do you reckon?

For all round going-off-edness I'd say Luke Egan.

I'll say Michael Peterson or Wayne Lynch.

Wayne Lynch (Goldie) Goes off on a shortboard as well as a mal, surfs witha smoooth style underpinned by powerful manouvres, and has gotta be one of the hellest watermen going. Still winning contests at 50+ when he bothers with them

I would say that wayne lynch, Nat young and midget were the best, but probally Wayne.

HE was trying new tricks and pushing turns further like spinning the tail out in 68' as well as hanging ten. He was only a junior then, and stepping out of the box and surfing different would have been hard.

He went on to dominate as well. He was the true 'progresseive surfer'

Being a goffy footer who grew up in the 80's, Occy and Luke Egan have always been fav's of mine. And Wayne Lynch was pretty amazing, jamming off the bottom and doing vert backhand reo's, while everybody else was doing dropknee cutties and quasimodo's. Hey Mad, I think your talkin' about Wayne Deane. And yeh, he rips.

tom carroll has the complete package:

2 world titles in a row...
won the '87 coke classic at manly in small surf...
legend at pipe for "that" turn (never mind the freefall takeoff before it)...
legend in indo...
legend on the tow-in...
still ultra-fit, still going hard in his 40's...
(the champions mentioned above are all legends - but how many of them are still surfing at such a high level, at really challenging spots, in their 40's? TC & cheyne...)

i will never forget a photo of TC at north narrabeen for a rip curl ad:
full stand-up barrel with his arms outstreched on either side, and still not touching the face or the curtain...with a smile on his face...
still got it in my poster collection...
as a teenager, i always looked in awe of that photo & wondered how in the hell you could remain that calm & focused inside a hollow beast...

besides that martin potter would have to be the best "adopted" australian surfer for his contribution to modern surfing...
nature is a language. can't you read?
if you spend your life looking behind you, you don't see what's up front...
