hard lessons

Post by daltz » Tue Aug 17, 2004 2:12 pm

whats the hardest lesson you've learnt

badly timed rock off
mouthed off to the wrong local
took off a little to deep

i learnt to keep the leggy off the bottom when on a shallow ledge. i generally put it over my shoulder while waiting.
got caught once at winki, leggy stuck on the cungi and couldnt paddle off the ledge. worked. same thing happened at la once too. the consolation is its one of the funniest wipeouts to watch i reckon

any stories?

I learnt the hard way that Tom Carroll only makes it LOOK easy. Tried to spin around late and take of under the lip. Thought to myself, TC did it at Pipe, I should be right in this beachy. Got absolutely pumped. Lesson: The pros are pros for a reason....

About 10 years ago I stood in the carpark and saw a hollow wave breaking on the other side of the bay once. Thought I was better than I was, took the 15 minute paddle over. Paddled into a bomb set, got to my feet and got pitched onto reef about one foot under the water. Popped up in a fair bit of pain, bit of claret flowing, a board that was in 3 pieces and faced with a fairly lengthy swim in. Saw this same wave start featuring in the surf mags about 3 years after that day and have seen some of the pro's struggle there. Its in Margaret River and its called "The Box". The lesson for me was to know when the situation is above your abilities.

reminds me of a saying my old man once told me about using public toilets...

...you don't need to sit on the seat...
...'cos Railway crabs can jump 3 feet!...

on the real subject...(and i still have not learnt)

beachbreaks get to a size when you just can't paddle out!
nature is a language. can't you read?
if you spend your life looking behind you, you don't see what's up front...
