Survey,sort of

Post by spork » Sun Feb 19, 2012 1:24 pm

Hi all, Nick here (I'm using my real name cos I'm trying to be legit about this)
Some of you may have seen on another thread that I looking into the manufacture of a hard case for travelling surfboards.
My case will be:
-Fully customisable for length and height (up to ten boards)
-Made of solid UV resistant plastic
-Lined with customisable styrofoam, which will also provide excellent insulation against heat, so good in the car for epoxy boards etc.
-Be roof mountable
-Come in various colours
-Lockable

What I would like from you guys is:
Would you be interested in something like this?
If so, how much would you pay (I'm aiming at the $300-$400 mark)
Is there any other features you would include?

Be Nice!
When it gets to this level of self important stupidity I lose interest.

Will it be called the Sporksack?

Because I just registered the internet domain name. :P

Nah seriously though sounds like a cool idea and in the same price range as the 2 - 3 board wheelies.

An easily accessible beer storage area. Gotta keep them cold and handy.

Starting price will be in that area, customising/expanding will obviously add $

You could put a little engine in it and a radio control system like drones and fly your boards over independently :D

Can you build a model that can carry human body parts ?

If not .....don’t worry I will get someone in China to make me one for $30.

China will be the source, hence the price.
C'mon guys, I'm trying to be serious. Some realistic replies amongst the piss taking would be appreciated.

Being serious for a moment

If I were the type to travel long distances for surfing on a regular basis then yeah I would definitely want something like this. Travelled with boards on a plane a couple of times and it stresses me the whole flight no matter how much bubblewrap and cardboard that I pack around them.

If you could get one that was roof rack mountable, say like a Rhino rack then that would also be pretty good, I may consider something like that. But price will be the motivating factor, based on how obviously and how much I would intend to use it.

I reckon you are getting some good replies here Nick.

Whose your target market?

I travel a bit and am very happy taking 2 or 3 boards in a padded bag.

I wouldn't see the need to buy a hard case: too much like hard work schlepping it around airline counters.

Target market is any traveling surfer or someone who uses a ute etc (lockable-insulated etc) and it defo will be roof mountable, i intend it to have several rack options -rhino-Rola -round/square bars etc.
My intention is to make the case lighter than current heavy duty travel bags with detachable wheels for bigger cases.

I reckon you've got a shot with the car based traveller. Plane travellers I'm not so sure.

If it's going to be roof/tray mountable, make it so that you can detach it from the roof without taking everything out of it, so that you could drive into the garage, attach some clips and lift it straight up for storage.

Drainage hole that you can attach a rubber hose to and get the salt off the car?

Have lines and notation on it showing the allowed size for each airline, i.e. if it's in this notch then it's good for Virgin/Qantas etc.

Make it accessible from the back/end as well as the top/side.

Have you considered what airlines will think of them? Seems to me that currently airlines are surprisingly accommodating with regular surfboard bags but they might not be with a 10-board hard case.
