car troubles
SO my ultimate surf vehickle, a 1993 volvo 940GL wagon crapped out last week. the auto gearbox gave out and just basically spins while the car doesnt move.
I rang a volvo mechanic and he said for a car of this vintage, repairing the transmission isn't practical. He said the best option would be for me to find a used auto tranny and they'll put it in.
I have no idea how much this should cost. this is my first automatic.
so what say you?
do I get a used transmission and pay to put it in? or cut my losses and try and sell the broken down volvo, and get a used toyota.
either way i'm fvcked

Re: car troubles
Few decisions here mate
You can go a used auto but you're essentially buying someone else's lifetime of usage so you've got no guarantee that it is not going to shit itself in the near future.
To get an auto rebuilt you're looking at serious dollars. I have had to get two rebuilt in the past (1993 and 1997 Commodore 4 speeds) The 93 one cost me $1600, the 97 one $1900 and that was quite a while back. A Volvo could be more considering its a Euro import. Correct me if I am wrong but I think that model is rear-wheel drive? If so it should be cheaper than fixing a FWD one.
If the cost of getting the auto rebuilt is worth more or equal value to your car then you will have to ask yourself the question whether you want to invest in it or, cut your losses, sell it for next to nothing and get a newer/new car. Used they average around the $1500 - $3500 at a private sale, considering your auto is stuffed you'd be lucky to get a $1000 for it - unless the rest of the car is in mint condition then you'd get more.
On the positive side nearly 20 years usage out of an auto is bloody good and Volvos are bullet proof. If you can't afford a new car I'd recommend getting the auto fixed properly because the rest of the car will probably keep chugging along for another decade anyway

Re: car troubles
boolplop, you could fix the trans and the car could still crap itself in any number of expensive ways.
I had a landcruiser manual box rebuilt, parts were $2k, I reckon getting a vulva box rebuilt could cost ya best part of $4k easy

Re: car troubles
yes, this is true saucy gibbon.
the volvo mechanic made it clear that it would not be worth my while getting this one rebuilt, considering the age of the vehickle. and it has 286 000 kms on her.
it's a used auto tran, or cut my losses.
I guess the concern is also what grooter mentioned, chucking in a 20 year old transmission doesn't instill me with alot of faith.
fvck automatics.
sigh* I loved the grey bitch so hard...

Re: car troubles
Mate, junk it.
You can get a used Toyota something or other wagon (if a Camry make it a 6 cyl) for a reasonable price and they're pretty reliable.
I'd go a manual though.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

the insurance company doesn't know that.*el rancho wrote:was discussing with my sweetie-pie about the possibility of driving it into some flood waters.

*In no way do I advocate this behaviour. In fact I hate all insurance scammers.
Re: car troubles
Yeah, ditch it. At 300k there's plenty of other expensive parts that most likely are nearing the end of their useful lives: today the auto-tranny, tomorrow the radiator etc.
In the meantime, park it on a busy road and hope someone writes it off.

Re: car troubles
el grande, yar unlikely to get anything for it , maybe $50.
just leave it parked on ya front lawn, mow around it regularly and let the grass grow all up and thru it.
its a wagon, see how long it takes to fill the back up with empties

Actually, why don't you organise a fund raiser, you know "send el rancho's volvo to the wreckers"
but i bet his whimsical wankerings won't be as wintonesque as some others

Re: car troubles
I would take it to a transmision specialist. Most auto box's are made in the same factory, Borg Warner for instance, and the parts are likely to be generic across most vehicles. Its worth getting it towed, in fact if you ring them they may even pick it up for free, I know used to do for lunched cars. That amount of K's is nothing if the car has had a reasonable amount of maitainance.
When it gets to this level of self important stupidity I lose interest.
