Well Andy sure won't be.
Quick Q; do the sponsored guys get acute from the sale of signature apparel?
Surely the sale of AI boardies would generate a pretty substantial legacy

Some more insight into the story:

http://www.theinertia.com/business-medi ... rons-life/

When Californian journalist Brad Melekian was commissioned to write an obituary of three-time world champion Andy Irons, he was surprised by the number of people who were keen to discuss the previously unreported troubled side of Irons’ short but brilliant life.

How come on CSI Miami they get the toxicology report back in a matter of hours, but it takes over a month for Irons' to be done?

Fellas,
Do we really need to know the actual cause of death?
Yeah sure, he had his demons – but don't we all!
No disrespect nor malice intended towards either the deceased nor his unborn child and remaining family: My initial thought regarding the fund for his unborn child was that it is a tasteless, cynical scam... and, try-as-I-may, this opinion hasn't altered.
Similar to the truly bizarre Sydney and Gold Coast 'paddle-out' / photo-op. phenomenon: both illuminate a prefab, seething and almost desperate need for tribal inclusiveness.
Let the man rest in peace.

Do we need to know anything?

Did we need to know who shot JFK?

Why a young couple had a head-on with a Semi trailer late at night on an isolated stretch of freeway?

A better question is: why are people so afraid of the truth?
And why are corporations so desperate to cover it and obscure it with deception and lies?

The truth is cleansing and healing in the long run.
Lies perpetuate the worst aspects of human nature.

Do we need to know anything?
... some find ignorance bliss. The 'system' is based based on this premise
Did we need to know who shot JFK?
The assassination of an American President at a (relative) crucial Geo-political point in time, which his participation was both fulcrum and nexus, does warrant something resembling a vague explanation.
Why a young couple had a head-on with a Semi trailer late at night on an isolated stretch of freeway?
If the information gathered can assist in averting another such tragedy in the same location - ABSOLUTELY!
A better question is: why are people so afraid of the truth?
true. Aside from making more coin for a few media outlets... do we GENUINELY NEED to know the truth to this scenario?
And why are corporations so desperate to cover it and obscure it with deception and lies?
indeed. I know I won't be purchasing the 'Special Limited Edition Andy Irons Memorial boardshort' anytime soon...

The truth is cleansing and healing in the long run.
Lies perpetuate the worst aspects of human nature.

Because we all know, deep in our hearts, that we are living a daily lie Steve.

Because we need those lies to keep getting out of bed every morning.

Because we wrap our tiny little lives in lies to try to feel that we are somehow connected.

Because at heart, we were born alone, and will die alone, and if there is a next journey after this life, we may be alone for all eternity.

and the blackness of those monstrous depths are far too scary to peer in to.

The truth, the truth.

We can't handle the truth Steve, and you know it brother.

Point taken, however ...the tragic death of a professional athlete, alone in a Hotel room due to... as yet, inconclusive circumstance, doesn't correlate to a highway tragedy. I appreciate the parallel, but the context is totally incorrect.
If the pending Toxicology Report indicates Andy's death is attributable to the results of drug overdose (legal or illegal) there aren't too many positive outcomes... aside from the ASP adopting a strict drug-testing regime? but hey... I'm being way too serious.
World keeps turning.
cheers

A collection for the wife & kid - at $650k p/a I think they will be OK.

Perhaps AI's ex-sponsors can now redistribute that money to more deserving surfers such as Bede Durbidge who has battled a lack of sponsors.
