Re: Ask Carroll
Hang on a moment. Beanpole is Crispin Flintlock? When did this come out? You mean to tell me the appalling picture I had of a Porsche driving, hooker banging dumb-arse sugar daddy is entirely fictional? Or is it in actual fact the real Beanpole?

Well I don't know if I'm flattered by being mistaken for Crispin but he's definitely getting more action than me. unless getting your beard stuck in the wax of your surfboard counts.
I get the impression I may have missed Crispins deleted post.

So sometime after midnight you logged into a thread that is essentially hosted by Nick, to tell him that you aren't reading what he said.

Re: Ask Carroll
Hi Nick
Just picked up a Al Merrick Black Beauty 6'3" for a trip to Indo.
Like your design advice on the hard edge rail that goes the length of the board.
Understand the edge gives it bite, but why have it running along the top half of the board?
When I was looking at buying it 2 surf retailers mentioned some guys sand back the edge along the top half to make the board more forgiving. Love the way it wants to surf on rail, very old school like me, just concerned jumping from modern thruster to BB whether I should soften the rail along the top before heading to Indo.
What your thoughts?
Thanks

Re: Ask Carroll
The hard underside rail forward of centre is often thought to cause the front rail to bog. This is a bit of a furphy in my opinion. Front rails catch and bog as a result of badly placed rocker or bad technical surfing skills, not because of the edge or lack of. A softer rail profile won't help either of those things.
A hard edge lets the board connect with the water better in a turn, and releases better at the end of the turn. The modern hard edge is just an advanced version of the tucked edge popularised (for good reason) in short single fins of the mid to late 1970s.
So yeah I wouldn't be sanding off any edges if I were you.

Re: Ask Carroll
Thanks Nick, no sanding for me
As I said I really like the way the BB surfs off the rail, can imagine on a good size, down the line wave it would want to just carve out nice long turns at speed, which is what I bought it for. Instead of taking a 6'8" semi gun, which last few trips never got used, I thought the 6'3" BB would be more versatile and fun. And as they say, its an iconic board, so nice to have one in the quiver.
Thanks

Like b4 the net and your world famous most boring thread.

The idea that you could or even should figure out a sport as complex and difficult as surfing all by yourself is dumb. Hardly anybody ever came close to doing that and even the one or two freaks who have, ie Greenough, relied on natural examples to learn from. Pretty much all the rest of us have learned by watching numerous other surfers over many years and talking and hanging with each other.
This thread is just another version of that, yeah there is a lot of stuff in here that might seem silly or annoying to you, but really, so what? I know I learn a lot from the questions people ask, it tells me just how much surfing knowledge is kinda taken for granted and how much commonly accepted stuff is inaccurate and unclear, and sometimes it makes me think in new ways about my own surfing experience.
if you have little pimples on your dick I think you should quickly rush to a hospital and ask a doctor. oh wait no why would ya do that. most blokes can figure out their health problems by themselves.

It also has a lot to do with the planshape in the tail.Nick Carroll wrote:The hard underside rail forward of centre is often thought to cause the front rail to bog. Re: Ask Carroll
aj are you implying there are people who don't?
Re: Ask Carroll
Judging by the extent to which I am ridiculed, very definitely. But, maybe that has more to do with me turning the pot three times clockwise as well as warming the cup.

Warm the cup and turn the pot three or four times.
Beanpole
You aren’t the room Yuke You are just a wonky cafe table with a missing rubber pad on the end of one leg.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Ask Carroll
Trev, I've taken to turning it three times clockwise followed by once counter-clockwise. Now that I'm doing it, Heaven forfend I should stop. I'm afraid of what my tea procedure will entail in 20 years time.Trev wrote:Only in winter, aj.ajohnsen wrote:Judging by the extent to which I am ridiculed, very definitely.
