Re: Ask Carroll
I wanted to wait until Mick had won or not
There was universal acclaim when Parko won last year. Do you think that Mick (now a 3 x world champ) does not get the respect and kudos he deserves? In a way kinda like a 2000's Damien Hardman?

I think a lot of people were stoked to see Parko get one because there was a sense that he might have ended up being the greatest surfer not to win one. That made last years WT just a bit more special.
Seems to me like Mick gets heaps of respect and kudos, yet this year was a battle between two surfers who have world titles to burn between 'em. And at the fringes, I get a tiny whiff of something else actually, a bit of "oh for fcuks sake, turn the pages of history already". Just a very tiny whiff of that.

Re: Ask Carroll
well Taj is a bit different, I think there has always been a sense that his life didn't revolve around the world title mission. Whereas Parko had committed himself to it heart and soul.
Re: Ask Carroll
I just the got the feeling that it was all a bit ho hum this year, similar to what you alluded to. There were some big calls that it was a year for the new generation- whether that was Jordy or JJF or even a brazo but it ended up business as usual.

Gabriel's surfing has turned a corner in 2013, he'll be a legit threat next year.

Re: Ask Carroll
Well this is an interesting one legion
I firmly believe there are good leg ropes and there are cursed leg ropes.
It's got nothing todo with the manufacturer, indeed you can have two identical leg ropes next to each other and one will be fine and the other will go bad.
Once a rope's gone, ie tangling every surf, getting in the way, etc, there's very little hope of salvaging the fcuker. You can try a permanent stretch job in an attempt to skinny it out - the ropes I've noticed are most likely to turn to shit are ones that are thick but short - but you weaken it a lot in the process and it'll probably just snap easier.
I would give it up and make sure in the future I only bought a thin as possible comp cord and a big long victory at sea one. The comp cord is less likely to go evil and will put up with a lot more than it looks, and you can have the big one for when you really do need a leggie.

I agree Nick. He looks to have gotten over his ankle injury, and regained his uber confidence.Nick Carroll wrote:Gabriel's surfing has turned a corner in 2013, he'll be a legit threat next year.
Do you think the full rotation alley oop is the new air reverse? And air reverses are now a bit old hat.
Gab, JJF, Jules have those things on lockdown. We know JJF is up there with KS in serious waves. But the other 2 have narrowed the gap, and now have some serious chops in the bigger stuff.
I'm calling they'll share the top 3 spots at next years end. And the reign of Kelly, Joel and Mick is over.

Oh fcuk yeah.loofy wrote:Nick, when people are tow surfing, when they let go of the rope........what then usually happens to the rope and handle, does it catapult itself through the line up and become a very dangerous object?
It's all over the place like a madwoman's breakfast.
loofy honestly, I wouldn't worry about it, you've got more chance (considerably more chance actually) of being gangered by a pack of Sydney Roosters players on a bender than of being bull-whipped by Laird's cast off sling.

Comp has been fine up to about 4-6' Legion. Iggy scale.
The difference in drag in small waves is astonishing.

Re: Ask Carroll
I've had a few that have supposedly high tech brass fittings etc, that then just rip right out of the Velcro part that goes around your leg because that connection is just a bit of plastic and some stitching
I have various good parts of legropes lying around from a variety of good legropes that all had some design flaw. None of the damage is from overuse wear and tear. Just a weak component in the design.
