How can a wetsuit be heavy to pick up but light to wear?
Or are they just great at maximising the comfort factor so the additional weight isn't such a factor
Cut. Good fit allows you to carry a suit.

I've had a few patagonias over the last five years. They have gotten so much better over time, and their new ones - the yulex - amazing. Heavy to hold, but not to wear. Very flexible and super warm. Anytime i've had an issue with them, they have replaced the old suit with a new one. Can't ask for much more than that.

Thanks for leaving this post way back when Batoes. I'm in need of a new suit this year. I won't be buying one full retail if I can help it, but will not buy another brand after learning more about how environmentally conscious the company is.

And for anyone thinking about buying one online. I went into the local shop to try one on. I have a been a Medium in ONeill steamers for the last 10 years. I'm 177cm tall, 80kg, wear 32" boardies. Get a Large Short in the Patagonia. Sweet fit.

Go green wherever ya can. And do whatever ya can to keep plastic from being generated.
I'll be busting out the patagonia pretty soon. Water is still ok, but wind has been chilly in them morning and that thing is wind proof. You can find discounted patagonia's everywhere these days.

Sorry Salty - i wish i could explain the weight thing better. It feels like a heavy suit to hold, but paddling is a dream. I've had suits that seem to just suck in water and are so bloody heavy you could feel them pulling you down.

I've got a japanese suit from cyber that's good too - neoprene is second to none. Soft and warm and going into its third season. I've had to patch up the knees, but that's been easy enough. It is zipperless, which i wouldn't buy again.

yeah, I figured they were slipstreaming in Need's wake.

Suits feel a bit/lot more high end than Need.
Yeah they are about a third more expensive.

Most of the new gen suit cos like Nche and Deverkos (sp?) go a bit below the big guns but a bit above Need. They are throwing in stuff like fleece and neoprene taping which costs any way you cut it.

I put my hand up for a Patagonia 4/3, the R3 suit I think it is? She's gonna get some testing, hope she can cope.
Are they all being made by the Sheico group? I know it makes only about 60% of the total wetsuit market, wondering (if you know) whether its a matter of using the old big company connections to do a cheaper low overhead production run through Sheico, or whether they are branching out to other suppliers.

Not that it really matters; at the end of the day its the suit that is important. I was just wondering how the market is working itself out with these newer companies (and the big guys struggling)

I got a couple here, R1 and R2. They are heavy in teh hand, but the cut of them, and the yulex. they fit snug and are warm.

too warm really for up here. The R1 is a 3/2.5 ... The 2.5mm shoulders and limbs is overkill.

I'm actually looking at getting a good sealed 2mm wettie for the whole winter here. my current short sleeve 2mm is cactus!

A 2mm steamer was all I ever had for Newcastle.
Was fine for all but the strong westerly wind days when I got cold after about an hour

Surely being two hours north of Sydney doesn't make that much of a difference to the water temperature. Some blokes in Sydney were already in steamers back in April.

There's a warm current from the north that reaches about Ulladulla in summer and retreats to, usually, not far south of Sydney. One year long ago, it retreated so far north that we had 14C water temps at Garie.

It probably never retreats as far as Newcastle.

Currents are almost 6 months behind the seasons. It stays warm till August usually. Every year they say it's unusual but I reckon it's normal. Starts to get cold just before everyone starts thinking about going swimming as the weather warms up. Freezes your butt off till late January.

this looks like it.

https://independentsurfco.com/products/ ... ip-steamer

really high end feel to it. Everything glued and taped and deluxe.

I've never heard of them, anyone else heard of em?
Independent = a couple of ex Billabong boys saying to themselves "fcuk this noise, we can do it ourselves"

quite a bit of that going on right now, a trend somewhat started by Need but being carried by a bunch of little labels, run by ex employees of big surf labels who've learned the ropes of designing and sourcing.

Good for everyone I reckon. Cheaper suits, still v good quality, just less overhead means lower prices. It does have a shelf life as a trend though.
I would consider one if they didn't list this as a feature:
"Metallic Silver and Black tonal graphics"

I prefer Need's anti-marketing marketing

There are two guys at my local who wear steamers all year round. Not sure if they wear 2mm versions in summer.

I could have gone out in a springy and a 1mm top on Sunday but I wanted to try out my new AG47. Out of a crowd of 30 or so, only two guys were wearing springys.

This has become the most retarded thread on RS. FFS if you're cold pull on a steamer. If you're not wear a springy. Who gives a rats arse? I surfed on Sunday in boardies because I felt like it. It doesn't make me cool.
