interesting see.....back in 78....the coverage and camera work shits all over the web broadcasts of today

even the commentry was better

p.s interesting comments posted here ( warning for lucky al....might stop him believing every press release he reads  ) from u tube

One of the classic final shoot outs, with two of the best surfers in the world at the time. Man awesome stuff wherever you found that, thank you, a real blast to see that again. there was still plenty of soul in surfing back then, even in the contests.....it saddens me to see what its become now.

p.p.s i recken lynch was robbed  :?:

yes he did(blair), meet up with him once when he was living on the central coast (dont know here he is now) and the boy could surf allright. Went out at crackneck with him when it was overhead and he was beautiful to watch, very stylish and drew awesome lines. Not sure what I thought of him as he as a bloke, he was going out with my girlfriends sister at the time and all he wanted to show me was his clippings from adds from tracks ect that he keeps in his scrap book   ( can anyone remember the add featuring I think blair, one of the ho brothers and someone else in those satin like boardies that were very shiny, bloody hell I would have been embarressed to do that add  ). But yes, watching blair surf was a pleasure indeed

Well they did have the assistance of three months editing time. You know, as opposed to an instantaneous feed from the other side of the planet.

Larry Blair lives in Bali...he married one of Mandira's(original Caangu warung owner) daughters.

When I was there last year they'd just had a lovely bonnie bubba.

Larry keep's a quiver of McCoy's in the warung and can be found on the biggest days at Outside Corner.

He won the Pipe Masters twice. Pretty good effort for a no-name from the Cenny Coast.

Good find lessormore.
I recall Larry Blair being a NIDA student when he won the Surfabout - apparently he was an unknown who came from "nowhere" and surfing was just a hobby to him, secondary to acting.
Was that Shane Stedman handing out the 1978 Surfabout prizes :?:

I remember the day of the finals - I pulled a sickie - and it was clean and offshore - the best North Steyne had been in ages - and there was a coomp on - doh. Still it was the best surfers of the time surfing some pretty fine beach break lefts. It was close, but on the day it looked like Larry just shaded Wayne.
I recall too another time they had Surfabout out the Bower in the early 70s when it was big. Hackman, MP and a real young MR and Jerry Lopez and Barry Kanniapuni(sp). Was funny seeing them riding Winki through - nobody surfed Deadmans back then - not that I can recall. Even guys like Lopez who was Mister Pipe came to grief on his backside on some sucky Winki bombs
