This is something I'm pretty interested in but I can't find this sort of stuff anywhere. Google was fairly fruitless so I'm turning to RS in the hope of an answer.
Basically when were breaks like Cyclops, Shippies and proto-slabs like the Box and the like first surfed/bodyboarded (thinking brad 'n' chad for Cyclops, not sure about the rest though)? Does anyone with a particularly photographic memory remember what magazines got the coverage or something? Pretty sure the first two are less then a decade old, not sure about Box though. I can only imagine the media circus that would've came when a wave as completely unprecendented as cyclops was ridden for the first time; alas, I was 10 years old or so, and living in the middle of nowhere

Re: The history of slab surfing..?
I don't know if Andrew Sheridan was the first to surf The Box but he certainly got all the coverage for it. In the late 80's any shot of The Box had Sheridan riding.
Shark Island was ridden by bodysurfers, paipos and the odd stand-up from the 60's. Jim Banks and Gerry Manion et al took it to another level in the 70's. Steve Doney and Chaz McCall were the first lidders to ride it as far as I know. I've got a few shots of McCall at The Island from Tracks circa 83.
Cape Solander (Ours) was first surfed in 1968 by stand-ups and paipos, before being forgotten for over 15 years. Certain Cronulla lidders rediscovered it in the 80's and had it to themselves for another 15 years. Everyone knows the rest of the story.
Story goes that Dave Guiney first surfed Shippies for many years on his own before Andy Campbell came along. Kieren Perrow, Drew Courtney and Mark Matthews were the surfers in the first big surf magazine spread. Think that would be late-90's (got the magazine at work).

Re: The history of slab surfing..?
Cyclops -
I think it was the WA bodyboard crew. Chris White - Tension vids - Brad Hughes, Chad Jackson (broke his back out there on one of the first of second sessions), Dave Winchester and Sean Virtue who surfed Cyclops first - maybe 8-10 years ago (see Tension 3, 4 or 5).
Shippies -
A surfing friend from Vic used to live in Tas and has recounted a story of being one of the first (there is conjecture on this one I believe) to surf Shippies at size with Andy Campbell. I think they were just going in there for a picnic with their wives and girlfriends and ended up surfing it pretty sizey. At some point after that pics came out with a name for the break of Fluffy Tonkas (something to do with the your 'porno name' name of your first pet, etc).

Early pics were in Riptide and one of the Riptide photo annuals.
