info on old boards ???

Post by pridmore » Tue Sep 29, 2009 7:45 am

Scored a few oldies recently and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this lightning bolt logo ? Also got an old 'McGrigor' from harboard rd. ( no pics ), any info would be appreciated, just curious to know a bit of their history, doubt they are worth much but love the old singles...

also have some others and a big range of 2nd handies ATM so if anyone is keen on a new board, let me know and I just might have something suitable for a good price.... 8)

I've got an old triple-stringer single-fin made by McGrigor. When I posted a photo ol' RV made a reference that sounded like he might be familiar with them.

Perhaps hit up Mr Veedaal?

Yep, especially if it's extra shine and bounce you're after.

You should've seen some of the pieces of shit a bloke was selling down at the Manly markets the other weekend for $300-$400. This retro thing has gone too far methinks. Especially when some very ordinary looking 80s thrusters get thrown into the mix.

Yep StuNet, first board was a McGrigor, but couldn’t tell you much MORE. Terrible head for information I don’t think I need, and I’m right. :D

Sadly Barry King passed away a few years ago. Im sure it's the same Barry King that shaped for Mc Grigor and used to compete against Nat Young and the like. Just before he passed he was shaping some very interesting boards out of his garage in Frenches Forest.
We miss you Bazz.

McGrigors were very much an Mid/North Steyne/Queensie/Curl Curl go. I had a couple over the years shaped by Daryl Holmes and Barry King - and yes they were pintails. Was a pretty consistent crew there with all those names that were mentioned earlier. Roddie Ball had his own side label too "Clear Sea" and all the others did side stuff too. I think Ian Goodacre (Goody) lives and shapes longboards now up Bonny Hills/Camden Haven these days on the Mid North Coast. Jack Knight and his brother Gordon both live on the Goldy - Jack has a factory at Miami and Gordon is or was glassing out of Currumbin somwehere - but they don't work together if anyones knows of their fractured relationship. It was a solid brand/make for a number of years. I think Brian is now round Byron way - but could be wrong.
As for Lightning Bolt - Gerry Lopez had his name associated with them and they were made out here under license by Barry Bennett. Again I think most were pintails - my brother had a cool one and surfed it hot - until it gave him 12 stitches in the face one 8 foot day at Lennox.
