Quad vs Twinzer

Post by channels » Wed Jun 03, 2009 3:16 pm

Back in the early 90's, Martin Potter and a few other were telling the world how good Twinzers (some sort of four fin designs) were but a couple of years later were all back on thrusters.

Anyone know the design differences between a quad and a twinzer and how has the quad fixed the apparent deficiencies?

Check out a guy called Wil Jobson....worked with him in Santa Cruz (northern california)....great shaper & an interesting guy. He worked with Pottz & M.R. on Twinzers early to mid 80s. He lived in a huge R.V. (no, not Ric Vidal...recreational vehicle) with a giant Monitor lizard called Gonzo....He would feed him live mice every week...fascinating to watch

This is probably the best photo of the fin configuration Clay:

Iggy is spot-on. Twinzer's were really just twinny's with fins the size of stabilisers outside. There's not a lot in common with modern quads really. They are loose in the tail like quads but can't go vertical, can't be 'pumped' through flat sections, and struggle to generate their own speed.

That said, they are incredibly fast down-the-line. If you're surfing a fast pointbreak where you'll be projecting horizontally a lot then they're great. Oh yeah, except for the barrel, they're pretty shit in the pit.

Easy to see why they've been forgotten really.
