He jumped in his big new car and did the Bean manoeuvre twice. I reckon it’d be easier to get a park in Bondi than Avoca at the moment.
I wouldn’t know though. Because the only person shorter than me is Nick. I’ve got my disabled sticker proudly on display because I need it. Nick is, well as we all know. Nick Farcken Carroll. He don’t need no disabled sticker. Come to think of it! The prick’s probably got a boat on the Pittwater!
Oh Jimmy.

So how many times did you actually?
One and a half.

Dilemma; old mate from Sydney up here on holidays with another north shore bloke. They can’t surf well. We are doing the enforced old mate catch up surf. Should I just enjoy it and chat away catching the odd wave and give encouraging head nods if they get waves or rip the bag out of it and leave the water in a “see you fucking later kooks”fashion?

What would you boys do?
Ask them two questions.
Why are they leaving Sydney at the moment?
If they’re gonna leave Sydney why go to Avoca?

I would advise you to be a Cnut. That way they won't get confused by your behaviour.
Just wondering what Jimbo's interpretation of "bean manouvre" is.
In my own case it would be giving Jimbo the finger.

Two good questions.

I’ll ask why they didn’t go to Crescent with the other geriatric kooks. Unfortunately, the city of broken dreams is off limits (that’s the Goldy if you hadn’t worked it out)

Jimmy, serious question. How does a guy from the shire end up on Goldy? Did I just answer my own question? But seriously, why. Got married, divorced, have kids so can’t leave? Didn’t get married have kids separated, can’t leave? Have the job of your dreams, don’t want to leave (arent you a kindergarten teacher?). Do tell.

Seeing as you asked so nicely I’ll elaborate in point form.
Left the Shire in the early 90’s to get away from the Shire.
Moved to Paddington/Darlinghurst to shag as many women as I could and be a cool guy.
Ended up becoming a DJ so stayed in the inner city until around the turn of the century.
Thought Sydney had become up itself so went OS for two years where I mostly lived in Barcelona and San Sebastián.
Came back and didn’t want to go back into my previous career. So I got a job as a kitchen hand and ended up starting a cafe from scratch where I was featured in Gourmet Traveller and Good Living. Sold that and moved to Bondi and went back into the corporate world. So that I could surf more. You don’t surf if you own and run a cafe.
The company that I worked for in my 20s approached me to run the QLD operation. I said I’d give it a go if I could fly back to Bondi to see my 7 year old daughter every weekend. Because at that point I had her on weekends only. I liked the idea of having an all expenses paid life up here and surfing loads and then flying back to Sydney every weekend to see my mates in Bondi and my girl.
Due to me spending a lot of time up here my daughter wanted to start spending time in QLD so it went from her flying up instead of me flying down a couple of weekends a month. To her asking her Mum if she could live here with me. So I’ve been sole carer for my daughter for the last 8 years and the opportunities and lifestyle that I can provide her with up here are considerably better than if I was paying off a two bedroom apartment in Bondi. I’ve traded that for a 4 bedroom home with a pool that’s 10 minutes to Burleigh and 2 mins to the beach out the front.
My disposable income is much greater and my life is so much easier. Despite what you might think. The GC is a surprisingly good place to live if you know where to live and what to do.
And when it’s on there’s no better place to surf I reckon.
Any other questions Thudros?

Thanks. Interesting journey.

The only disappointment in that story is you’re raising your youngen to be a Queenslander but, hey can’t have it all.

That was succinct Jimmy, a life in five paragraphs!

We should have a new Realsurf thread "My life in five paragraphs or less"

Almost completely outside my world of experience for the mum to give up the kid.
You must be a good dad Jimmy.

Doubting myself now that she’s on the way to 15, Offy. Really she’s a good kid and is politically engaged and mature.
And the only reason her mum let her come to me full time is that she initially came up for 6 months. At the end of it she went back a different kid. She was swimming competitively and doing really well at school. The teachers up here seemed to be really results driven compared to her school which was in Austinmer. They’re all banjo playing hippies down there and she thrived with a bit of a bogan injection if that makes sense. Anyway the mum knew that she should be up here for her development and she even moved up to Mt Tamborine eventually with her belly dancing pain in arse wife.

The Jimmy saga gets more interesting by the day.
Sniff's stomping grounds? Her belly dancing wife?
Can't wait till the next installment!

South maroubra. Wasn’t too bad for a while there, the wind went light and sorta cross/offshore. Not a lot of push but some nice shaped peaks in the chest high plus range

Look, I'm ready to be convinced but I find it hard to accept the only semi good footage Ive ever seen is that guy from Byron that flaps around in Indo and a clip of someone surfing a nugget or a astronzap at tiny National Park. Help me out here guys. Hatchie tearing the bag at VooDoo would be great.
That guy from Byron, the real McCoy, selling a bunch of his quiver.

I knew it would be interesting. Jimmys got that abrasive undertone in his writing that indicates a back story of substance.

None of it was really secret.
He's disclosed most of it piecemeal before.
I'm not pissing in his pocket but I admire the way he's done it.

Drove down for an arvo paddle at Bondi. Quite a while since Ive surfed there. Got a park. Previous drive down earlier for a swim took two go throughs. Went right down the end and paddled out in the rip. It was pretty crowded. Sat a fair way out and got three good set waves. Banks have improved a bit. Good fun.
