Beaches here properly closed today, barricades, security guards and council rangers not allowing access.

About thirty out at Maccas this morning. Fifteen when I checked it again at 2:00. All beaches had barricades up.

You know one feature of the WW2 wrap up was the behaviour of the two bob big shot authoritarians, who didn't want to let go of the power they'd attained during wartime.

That's where the term "two bob big shot" arose.

Died in the seventies with decimal currency too, didn't it?
I agree about authoritarian control but it looks like those clowns aren't actually very effective at the moment.

Every 5-10 years or so I go for a surf in Perth. I went to Scarborough this morning: offshore winds, a couple of feet of swell.

From the car park I could see the swell lines. I was going to check it, but then I thought, nah, if I do that I won't go in the water. So I got changed and walked down with my board.

A reasonable swell was closing out as it hit the sand banks. I watched for about 15 minutes. I could see clearly any waves being ridden by any one of about 200 surfers around 500m up and down the beach. No-one caught a wave that wasn't actually closing out as they dropped in. Average length of ride was less than about 2m, but it was in the foam. A few dozen learners risking serious neck and back injuries.

I went back to my car. I could check the reefs, but they'd be as crowded as fcuk, hard to keep a social distance, let alone catch a wave.

I drove home.

I general, there's no headlands nor sufficient tidal movement to sculpt the sand into decent banks in Perth

After avoiding going backside for the last 30 years (West Oz and Bali are overwhelmingly lefts, and with the majority natural footers preferring rights, so why bother competing with the crowds on the right handers?), I now find that I prefer rights on a skateboard.

The heel is indeed mightier than the toe!

So now I can't wait to start surfing rights - woo-fcuking-hoo, digging that heel in off the bottom and carving it all the way around of something powerful.

A mate from Perth texted me a surf report this morning that was close to exactly the same as yours "Scabs, 2 foot or so, banks are so fcken straight."

Winter swells were sometimes OK, as long as a few earlier storms had broken up the banks. Once it got to 3 - 4 metres out to sea, it might translate to 3 - 4 foot at the beach.

But fcuk trying to be a surfer there permanently.

I remember when I went to college in Newcastle and got to surf a few lefts on my backhand after growing up on the North Coast. Backhand surfing on lefts was a notorious weak point of Gold Coast surfers.

Should have surfed 3ft offshore beach breaks yesterday but council and NC said all beaches are closed in our shire. Turns out Parks Victoria disagree and say they are open. Now it's onshore junk for the rest of Easter.

Haha I just threw that in there. Only read his article last night. But if he could report beaches are closed more often that would be nice.
