Perhaps we could solve this by having a logarithmic scale where, say, learner/beginner is 1 degree of ability, intermediate is 10 times better, and pro 100 times better. Self assessment is, of course, not acceptable

How about you nick? Happy with your skill set? Reckon it’s a decent return on a lifetime of investment?

Nah, honestly I think I have frittered a fair bit of my life away on it. I do feel fantastic in the water though, pretty fcuken sharp right now.

So if we look at the Bell Curve we should see the majority of surfers being intermediate trending to the upper end of the scale in places with consistent good surf like Bondi and trailing toward the lower end of the scale at places with marginal surf like the Gold Coast.

No he is suggesting you are Intermediate

Polebean asked a generic question about this back there somewhere. Truth for me is I do not think the word means anything. There is such a huge gulf between a beginner surfer and a super skilled pro level surfer these days that to try to moderate the gap in some way is kind of impossible. “Intermediate”? More a Dunning-Kruger thing than an actual thing perhaps.
That's where most surfers live though. I guess learners hope to be intermediate as a realistic goal. From my point of view an intermediate surfer could do most basic functional manoeuvres on an average to good wave and might attempt them on a more challenging wave or might attempt something a bit more challenging on a regular wave once in a while. Sure there's degrees of ability within that and young surfers would aspire to be good obviously but most surfers wouldn't get past that level. If they did it would be within a well defined set of circumstances like at their home break for a while.

I was once a pretty good surfer. Deliberately living on a dole budget diet of rice, weeties and toast combined with keenly contesting club stuff will do that

Then I became responsible, bought a house and lawnmower. The rest is history

My 1st lawnmower was a wide 20” cut and threw grass out the side. Was really good because the house had a big yard of rampaging kikuyu

We had a Scott Bonnar. Beast of a thing. With about a half acre to mow it was a weekly task on the North Coast in Summer.

Overtime, the carburettor became difficult. Had to manually choke it with a stick to start. Stick had to be the right size though (I think it was about 5mm diameter) and the timing before removing it was critical

I call my mower le bron. It's a twenty year old Gravely commercial walk behind rig.
Would cut through the Maginot Line like a tiger tank through Belgian butter if given half a chance. .

My old man bought a flymo when I was a kid. Me and my brothers would take turns mowing the lawn. Because I was a lazy cnut and always at the beach on weekends, the grass (fcuken kikuyu again) was the height of an ancient Japanese bamboo forest whenever my turn came around. A pair of scissors would be have been a fair competitor to that worthless contraption

Flymo sounds far from intimidating .
