Nah let’s go a bit further here.

Possibilities:

Shearer read “Five Ways To Improve Your Pop-Up” on theInertia, thinking he’d get a laugh out of it. But when he read it he realised that for decades, he’d been popping up the wrong way.

After years of dissing zip free wetsuits, Shearer tried one and realised it allowed him to paddle much easier.
