Now, getting back to the obvious logic of 3ft equaling 1ft "because everyone says it does".

I know spot x will get nearly all the energy, spot y most and z very little.

If I was building surf forecast software I would build this info into it.

I'm very surprised that no forecast site has done this already. The info to do it would be tedious to collect (easy to program and update though) but you only have to do it (correctly) once.

This is a great opportunity for us Steve, we can design and build a surf forecast site that will make us rich.

We'll probably need to be rich to hire body guards to protect us from the irate locals though.

Cranked, just remember all of these guys said the same thing about litres a few years ago.

6 years ago: Every real surfer knows the only dims that matters are Lx W x T. None of this litres shit, thats just ridiculous. Kooks. Pathetic value that means nothing and is completely irrelevant.

today: do you think going from 30.2L to 30.5L will make a difference? My ideal is 30.285L but i've put on 18kg so was thinking of going up a little bit.

There does seem to be a missing factor(s) in the energy of a swell prediction/recorded or how it unloads on a break eg. A 2.5m SE swell @ 10s can have a different energy to a swell of the exact same dimensions at the same break. I just dont think that kj calculator measures it.

tbf, litres is still a really shit measurement to take into account when getting a board.

i have a 28l board here which floats and paddles better than a 30l board.

Don’t start a bloody litres debate again.

Trivia.
Not one of my boards has litres on it and I haven’t a clue how many they are.

Volume isn’t the only factor determining how a board paddles, and the laws of physics say a 30l board floats better than 28l board, providing the weight of the 2 boards is the same. The type of foam, contrary to popular belief makes no difference.
Volume is really just another dimension to consider when looking at board dims, or to not consider at all, some people place more importance on it than perhaps it deserves.
Same as Kiljoules, it’s there, take it or leave it.

Re: volume and paddling power..I fixed up an old tuflite Tolhurst Fish and it paddles crazy fast, catches waves too easily and takes off like a fcuking rocket. Flat out riding it.

Six great waves today that I'll remember forever. All well over head high, twisting, writhing pedal to the metal. One 400m, the rest 200-300m, glassy uncrowded conditions. 7' zot was fast and perfect for me.

No one wanted the primo takeoff position, in contrast to yesterday when there were ten or more of us jostling for postion.

Tomorrow is the day, supposedly.

Just got back from checking Ulus, perfect conditions, glassy, light warm offshore breeze, a lazy inconsistent but friendly looking long period swell. About 15 surfers scattered around, nymphs playing in the low tide pools as the sun sinks down behind the Java volcanoes.
