does anyone else feel like firing up a flamethrower and going on a merciless killing spree every time cranked measures his waves in kilojoules?
But crabmeat, it gives you a much better idea of the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%.
Are you familiar with swell interval at all?

How does one calculate a swell in kilojoules?

FFS Braithy, that is precisely why kJs are useful, it is derived from both the swell height and swell interval.

Hmmm. Cant we just use swell height and interval then?

The relationship between them is complex as per the formula in the calculator, you would not predict the power of the bigger swells where the swell height difference may jump just 20% but the equivalent kJ difference is 400%

It’s not the Iggy method of wave height estimation. That’s what wrong with it.

When it comes to wave height around here, imprecisely wrong is acceptable.

It's an equation for open ocean and so totally useless.

Didn't you read your own link Cranked?

No I didn't, no real need, if you don't like it use a different one. It was purely an example.

Nevertheless, the energy of the swell in the open ocean will be largely preserved so I don't see a problem with using that anyway.

I'm not privy to how exactly the guys at Surf Forecast calculate it. Are you saying that it can't be calculated to a reasonable level of accuracy?

In any case, I and many, many other people I talk with, have found the Surf Forecast kJ predictions very useful, so much so that I don't even look at wave heights any more

You yellow bastard! Get in here and contribute.

For example, you could tell us how many kilojoules were in your most very recent waves.
